Simms on Collins: There but for a SBXXI victory go I

a_kcollins_i.jpgInteresting comments from a call earlier today in which CBS analyst Phil Simms discussed Kerry Collins as the latter prepares to start his first home playoff game since goring the Vikings, 41-0, in 2001 at Giants Stadium.

Click below to read them.

Simms always was a big KC fan during Collins' days with the Giants and, like me, was skeptical of the 2004 decision to deal for Young Eli, in effect bringing the Collins era to an abrupt close.

(Simms on the legacy of Kerry Collins if he should lead Tennessee to Super Bowl victory):

"If I hadn’t won I would’ve been in the NFL coaching. I’d have been fired a couple of times. And I’d be bitter. I’m not even being funny. That is probably the truth.

"When people write and categorize him (Collins) ‘oh, journeyman quarterback’ – I know he’s been with a few teams – but he’s thrown for a tremendous amount of yards. And when you look at what he has done this year, he's avoided sacks, can throw the football incredibly well, on the move, going backward, while people are hitting him, and he's been careful with it. And most of all, he's got a terrific throwing arm and he is a borderline terrific thrower of the football.

"It’s hard for the national media to give him credit because the pizzazz is not there. We haven't built him up to some super player. They just downplay, 'Oh, well, what did he do with the Giants?' Well, he did a pretty good job with the Carolina Panthers, too, and he won a starting job out there with the Oakland Raiders and at times had some good moments out there.

"Kerry Collins is extremely capable and has been terrific this year. He just happens to play for a team that has a lot of good components and we’re just undervaluing what he has done. But if he wins the Super Bowl, I don't know, I'm sure there will be the naysayers that still take something away from him, 'Like, anybody could have done it with that team, they don't ask him to do much.' Well, then those are the people who don't know what they're talking about."

Neil, couple of questions regarding 1050..
1) Does the fact that Kay's show is getting increased by an hour signal that Kay's ratings have been rising lately and Francsa's ratings declining a bit due to him going solo?
2) What do you mean by a move was dicussed to FM? Just Kay's show or ESPN Radion in NY full time like in Dallas?...

Didn't Neil say yesterday Mike's ratings are doing great? I don't think WFAN sweats 1050 one bit

Harry: 1. Kay is improving but so far Michael has not suffered from that. 2. Disney has had discussions to buy 101.9 FM and move its NY sports talk station there.
