Thom Brennaman believes Tim Tebow is a swell guy

superman.jpgLike TBS' Chip Caray, Fox's Thom Brennaman often seems to be doing a clever parody of an old-time sportscaster, except that he's serious.

His outing with analyst Charles Davis for Fox's third and final BCS Championship Game was particularly amusing, especially his over-the-top deification of Tim (Superman) Tebow.

My favorite moment came late in the game, when - just as it seemed Brennaman and Davis were ready to bronze Tebow on the spot - the saintly quarterback was flagged for taunting an Oklahoma player with one of those Gator chomp motions.

(To be nice, I won't mention the goof earlier in the game in which Brennaman and Davis confused a third-and-goal for a fourth-and-goal. Stuff happens on live TV.)

College football and basketball exist in remarkably parallel universes.

One has an exciting regular season and a moronic, endless, anti-climactic postseason.

The other has a largely meaningless regular season, and a sublime postseason.

Whatever. It's pro football season now.

(UPDATE: Check out Adam Abramson's take in the comments section. He cares more about college football than me and thus was more offended than amused by Fox's issues Thursday night. Here is his college sports blog.)

(UPDATE: Now I'm feeling bad because I've ticked off college football fan readers and made fun of Abramson's "Super Bowl." For them, here is a roundup of negative Fox reviews. Happy? Can we move on now that college football has decided its "champion" just in time for pitchers and catchers to report?)

"Old time sportscaster" = Keith Jackson, correct? At least that's who I kept hearing.

And I don't think "Superman" was what Brennaman and Davis had in mind.
I fully expected Tebow to shed his uniform after the game and be carried out of the stadium on a mule or the shoulders of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and the other eight apostolic linemen, dressed in a long flowing robe and sandals.

All in all It was a great game (the over was 69 points?) despite the ONE glaring void in the telecast....
How can you have a Univ of Florida game without Erin Andrews?

.......AND
I coulda sworn I saw Mother Theresa on the sidelines dressed in a modified two piece burkha with slightly soiled knee high socks and waving pompoms.

And what was with all of the Florida players getting muscle cramps?
Have they never heard of Gatorade down there?

Neil,

You're being too nice. Those two are HORRIBLE.

Davis' analysis was nonexistant. All he did was try and predict when Florida would blitz the ball.

They goofed a false start penalty in the first half.

They went bananas in the second half when Tebow optioned for the shovel pass to Aaron Hernandez while rolling to the right. It was the third time in the game they had run it, and Davis finally took the time to explain what it was. His explanation? "Tebow has three options. Pitch it to his tight end, Hernandez. Keep it. Or pitch it to his running back!" Thanks, Chuck.

They were awful. They also did the Orange Bowl, when they called Virginia Tech "West Virginia" and botched multiple plays the way they did on the goal line last night.

That crew is laughable. The producer is as bad as them.

But this is what happens when you cover 4 college football games a year.

Adam,

How about the fact that on a HUGE goalline sequence, nobody knew what down it was! 2nd down became 3rd down, 3rd down became 4th down, and 4th down became "oh wait, this is 4th down." Nobody corrected them, and, that's right, THE DOWN IS WRITTEN ON THE MONITOR!

Video: http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2009/01/band-shots-down-during-bcs-title-game.html

Adam: I have no problem with your analysis. Yes, they were severely lacking.

I just couldn't get myself sufficiently worked up for an angry review.

Dude, it's only college football! This is New York! Relax!

The Giants play Sunday. If Buck and Aikman are horrible, I will be sure to explore that in detail.

Ben,

I, too, was watching the game in Flushing.

I didn't bother to mention the goal line goof up because Best hinted at it.

I almost lost my marbles on that one.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Best,

Last night was my Super Bowl. NFL is inconsequential to me.

It's all I have in this lonely world.

My cruel picture of the crying OU band member was linked on Deadpsin today, though. At least I have that.

"Dude, it's only college football! This is New York! Relax!"

So does this mean this reader from AZ can't read this blog anymore?

P: You're allowed to read. You have a team in the NFL playoffs!

Brennamen and Davis shouldn't be allowed to go near a football field ever again. Thank God Fox is no longer showing BCS games.Nice work by the NCAA going for the most money by selling the broadcast rights to their biggest games to a network that can barely spell BCS. Let CBS, ABC and ESPN handle the big games since they actually know what they're talking about. I'd rather hear Flutie and Craig James (I know, but still) than Davis and Brennamen.

At least then I'd know what down it was.

My other favorite from last night's game in the first quarter:

Thom: "Of course, you always have to be aware of the blocked punt in this situation."

Um, yeah, Thom, UF rushed a total of ZERO people. good call.

Oh, and by the way, Chris Myers is not good at postgame interviews. His low point was messing up the surprise by telling that Boise State RB's girlfriend he was about to propose before he actually did it!

Neil,

You'll always be the man in my book.

Always.

I understand the apathy for my beloved sport that comes along with working at Newsday and living in the area.

Hokies for MNC in 2009 or 2010!

Neil ... love your stuff.
I think you have misjudged the anti-Fox revolt among College FB fans. It is deep and it is strongly held. Brennamen and Davis have no business doing that game. In TB's defense - his director is barking at him to promo the return of 24, look at the neato camera toy from DirectTV, tank the guys in the blimp, pitch it to Chris Myers. The man can't even watch the game!!! That said, the third or fourth and goal screwup is flat inexcusable. As with the BCS - you have to look at the "body work." Fox is miserable at College FB. And, as for the NFL, I am so sick of that dancing, preening Transformer creature they show about 60 times a game. (FYI - former broadcaster, 30 year radio morning newsman, did some college play by play.)

Adam: I remember olden times when we had full-time college football writers and covered big bowl games. Sigh. You were in diapers then, I think.

Anyway, I've decided to give up the business and move to The Philippines to start a cult dedicated to the worship of Tim Tebow.

505, Gatorade might be good for that finger cramp you got this morning.

P, Best is having a hard time getting his melon around the fact that the internets know no bounds. But even when he does, New York will remain the center of his universe.

So, Brennamen praises a college kid for going to missionaries overseas and some how thats wrong. Give they guy a break. Maybe he should have praised the kids that were suspended from Miami and then this would have gone unnoticed. Now that football season is over we can jump on the announcers that praise Tyler Hansbrough and talk about how Tebow is noot a real quarterback.

CC: Really, what the ---- do you want from me? There are many blogs that cover the entire nation. This blog, like my newspaper, emphasizes local coverage, now more than ever, which I believe is the correct strategy as we try to differentiate ourselves in this complicated media environment. I make no apologies for focusing primarily on NY issues. That's what we do here. That's all I really have time to do well. I appreciate greatly that you and others outside the NY area still find material of value here to read, but I can't worry about catering specifically to San Diego or New Mexico readers. Leave me alone! NY is the center of the universe. I was not aware that was a matter subject to debate. Go sun yourself.

Best, Chilkoot. Ease up, gents. Remember, you're friends! Chilkoot, you were in Best's basement. Go easy on him.

Neil, it did seem to me that the announcing/commentary on last night's game was somewhat ... um ... unpolished. It was somewhat surprising given the magnitude of the game.

If Joe Buck did that quality announcing on a Fox Super Bowl oops Big Game, he would be fired the next day for being incompetent. I am glad that ESPN takes this over because at least Herbstreit knows his stuff and Musberger can be tolerable at times, and Nessler knows but won't get the game.

Chilkoot was in Best's basement? What, as a hostage?

"This is New York!"

Maybe a trip to Alaska to cool off is in order? The discussion you started this morning had to do with the television coverage of the BCS Championship Game between Florida and OK. What does that have to do with New York, other than there were several million people there watching along with the several million more in the outer rings of the Universe? We stopped by this morning to see what the WatchDog thought of it all and were given a Big Apple to bite (never mind the maggots)! P from AZ and I thought we would spit it back a bit. The popularity of your blog beyond the first rings of the Universe seems clear and should be fostered in order to facilitate your transition to delivering your work exclusively electronically.

Happy Fryday!

Neil,
Any chance we can get the overnight ratings for area code 505 from last night's event?

BTW,
Anyone else notice the uniforms on the Florida Marching Band?
If anyone is taking a Carnival Cruise this weekend, don't be surprised if the Carnival representative meeting you at the airport is playing a tuba or a trumpet when they greet you.
The only thing missing from the half time show was Kathy Lee Gifford singing along with the Marching Carnivalettes.
Bob Dickinson has outdone himself with his marketing acumen, once again.

Neil -- Most at Newsday wouldn't believe it, but I've covered BCS games in the past.

Sadly, I'll never do that here.

Adam:

It wasn';t that long ago Newsday had a real fulltime college football guy. Great writer named Chuck Culpepper, who loved the game, but always never had a problem focusing a twisted eye on the overzealousness of some of the football factory nations around the country.

I think he left to go to the LA Times in 2005 or 2006.

JBM: Don't forget Tim Layden, Ivan Maisel and Kelly Whiteside.

I505: No.

CC: I just thought I should comment on the announcing for the big game, which I did, but not that I needed to do an entire review on it, because . . . THE GIANTS ARE PLAYING SUNDAY!

This is the thanks I get for making a right turn en route from SF to NYC in 1985 to attend your wedding.

I'm always thankful for your wit and unusal New York sense of humor. That's why I stop by. But Chop Bustin' is one of my bad habits (farting is another).

Yes, the wife and I were very glad to have you join us at our wedding celebration. And for dinner when you were in our Fare City to cover SB XXXII and the future Jets QB. Perhaps we can get together again in Tampa when you are down covering Jughead vs. Rivers in the next roman numeral encounter. ;)

Culpepper was a genius writer. His top 25 was brilliant. I heard he's writing in enbgland now

I believe he is - he recently wrote a book about Portsmouth FC - an EPL team in England. It is a very good read.

Chump - loved the Top 25 - that was a must read every Friday heading into the weekend.

Best: Fogot about those other three. as well, my mistake. Maisel now writes for espn.com on college football, and i think Layden went to SI. Where's Whiteside at?

Also neil, since you brought up old writers, could you give an update on two more. Shaun Powell, did he get the axe last month during the recent layoffs? That would be a real shame - he was a good writer for you guys for many years.

Also, you mentioned a few weeks back that the Post's mark Canizarro was seriously ill - is that still the case?

I will call my boss Monday and ask him what the heck (if anything) I can say about Shaun. I understand your confusion and frustration.

To the best of my knowledge Mark still is ill. I will call him tomorrow and ask.

College football fans bitch and moan about getting a playoff system, but still watch the BCS garbage thrown at them?

You people are your own worst enemy. You want a playoff? Hit em where it counts. Money and ratings. Stop supporting this garbage.

Its ok to watch your team, but turn your back on everything else. Its the only chance you've got.
