Frank Gifford looks back at '58 title game and SBXLII

greatestgame.jpgI used to do sports book review roundups in advance of Christmas/Chanukah (as well as Father's Day).

Then I started blogging. Now I sneak in reading whenever I can, for example on a vacation during which I did not have access to my laptop or the Internet.

Thus did I read Frank Gifford's book, "The Glory Game," about which I wrote in my Tuesday newspaper column.

I also wrote about the Jets-Pats game highlighting the NFL Network's 2008 slate and YES matching MSG's offer to simulcast Mike Francesa's radio show.

The deal has not yet been announced, but I believe it covers five years at between $2 million and $3 million per year.

One of my favorite teen year's books was written by Frank. Gifford's Profiles in Courage came out around 1976, featured a preface by then "friend" Howard Cosell, and highlighted figures in sports that Frank considered inspirational. Thirty years later, many of these individuals are largely forgotten (blind golfer Charlie Boswell, Ken Venturi, and Rams GM Dan Klosterman), but they have kept alive the memories of some individuals who pushed themselves for reasons other than monetary rewards. In addition, the gushing forward by Cosell is hysterical in light of what happened to their relationship in the following years.

Dave Klein of the Star Ledger also wrote a fascinating book about the 58 game in the late 70's that featured profiles of what the various Giants and Colts were up to in the late 70's.
