Craig Carton, Sal Marchiano are odd couple on Ch. 11
As I briefly mentioned in my Friday newspaper column, Ch. 11 Thursday night offered a highly unusual pregame show featuring WFAN's Craig Carton and WPIX's Sal Marchiano, who was partying with Joe Namath before Carton was born.
How did this come about? I emailed Carton the following inquiry, which I hear he mentioned on the air: "How did this Ch. 11 gig come about? With all due respect, you do not seem like an obvious choice for this role, sir."
Carton's emailed response: "with all due respect"............????? perhaps you have underestimated my incredible popularity, good looks and pleasant personality."
Umm . . . like I said, it was a weird show, with Carton awkwardly veering from hints of his on-air personality to a more understated, reverent TV persona. (He only mentioned Gisele Bundchen after Marchiano did.)
I asked WFAN operations manager Mark Chernoff how all this came about, and he indicated Channel 11, knowing Carton is a Jets fan, thought working with the station would be of benefit to both outlets.
"We both promoted each other and it was a nice 'win-win' for everyone," he said.

WOW!
Neil,
That's some crack reporting there. Chernoff and Cartoon in the same article.
If they gave Pulitzers to people who interviewed the BIGGEST LOSERS on the FAN, I'm sure you'd WIN.
WIN WIN Huh?...sounds like Chernoff is shopping him around?
A man with integrity admits it when he makes a mistake!
I think an appropriate analogy is like the guy who is trying to secretly get his wife to leave him and he introduces her to a male undewear model named Flavio.
"Here honey meet Flavio he's a new friend of mine. By the way, why don't you two kids go out for some drinks and dinner and maybe see a show. Here honey here is my credit card and your passport just in case you two want to jet off somewhere for the weekend. It's ok, I'll watch the kids and feed the dog while your gone and if you feel more comfortable not coming home no problem, no hard feelings".
Neil, I've always admired and enjoyed your contributions to our local papers. Compared to some of the other media journalists, you show compasion to go along with your commentary. As a Special Education Teacher I was touched by a recent blog on the Mets' message board on Mets.com. One person wrote how they couldn't "hear" the games on SNY because, not only is he deaf, SNY does not offer closed-caption services to their games. The YES network, as well as the national games on ESPN & FOX offfers this much-needed service . Is there anything you could do to put pressure on our beloved SNY execs? Thanks! Mr. DinoMets
