Mike Francesa, Joe Benigno duo hits WFAN today
Curious readers have asked when I will weigh in on the most pressing issue of our times: What lucky guy(s) or gal(s) Mike Francesa will tab for his supporting cast.
I quite enjoyed the trio of Francesa, Chris Carlin and Kim Jones, especially given the fact they were together for the quietest three-day period in the recent history of New York sports in October.
But as long as Mike continues to bring in prospective sidekicks, I will withhold final judgment. The Francesa/Benigno pairing Friday and Monday should be interesting.
(The best possible thing for Joe, of course, would be a Jets loss Sunday, which would make Monday at 1 a must listen.)
I am not going to point out that Joe is six months older than Mike, because far be it from me to be ageist. I have nothing against people over 50. My softball team has a shortstop who is 50!

where is the foward thinking on this? they are so arogant at the fan,top exs have to be replaced for the station to have any chance for the it factor to return. they just have become complacent in the exs suite.

The more i think about this, the more i believe what they're going to end up doing is something akin to the Sports Huddle (guys revolving around eddie andelman anchor) in boston years ago. Mike's problem is that when directing or leading other people, he's the questioner injecting opinions along the way as opposed to when we was with Dog (where, although, they traded roles, more deference was given to Mike's opinion).
it's a tricky line (spot), and mike pulled it off with carlin and continent. with 1 new person, it looks like a cohost. with 2 people, it would appears (for now) to be 50% Mike and 50% for the pair. I believe, he'd feel more comfortable under that scenario.
I doubt it will be Cont. & Kim because they each have too much to give up. Cont. probably would jump at it (and give up everything but the play by play), but I don't think Kim would and the magic is with them as a pair with Kim being more key. W/o Kim, you need someone with some sizzle, or sex appeal or something and someone with the chops to hang with Mike. No idea where else to look right now.
Isn't that a failure of management, that there's nowhere else to look right now? Russo's been gone for a couple of months and was rumored to be gone far longer, yet there was no plan and no backup. Everyone brought in to try out has been from the current stable of talent, not one outsider. If that doesn't speak volumes about the poor management of the FAN I don't know what does.
To me it is a no brainer you get Carlin and JOnes. After the first day getting used to having 3 in there at once the next two days were very entertaining and interesting. it seemed that they all bounced well off of each other and I bet if you asked Mike he probably had a great time it actually sounded and looked like he was enjoying himself for a change.
In terms of Carlin and JOnes giving stuff up to go there as I thought it was not going to be a true pairing what is not to say that one couldnt leave for a bit or a few hours to go do what they do. If YES re-ups with Francesa it would make sense for her to do both. She could be there til

I thought Jones and Carlin did well--especially Jones, as she's feisty enough to hold her own with Mike. I could see a situation where some days you have all 3 on the show, some days either Carlin or Jones, depending on Jones' YES duties and Carlin's 10 jobs. (Remember Bob Huessler will be the update guy, and as a huge Met fan will have more of a speaking role I bet than the average update person.) Also, Jones is basically off from October thru March when the Yanks are off--she just writes an NFL column for the Ledger as far as I know. If Mike stays on YES it's even more of a no-brainer.
I've heard WFAN like the Beningo/Roberts pair and will not break it up.
Benigno is the best personality on the FAN... He should win that spot with Francesa but id rather him stay with Roberts on the mid day b/c that is when I get to listen most..
Im sorry the Beningo pairing is very hard on the ears for me. Maybe because I am female and yes I know not their target audience but the screaming that he does I can only take for a few minuntes. I dont mind someone being passionate but it gets tiresome after a minute or two
