Mets nearing radio deal, probably with WFAN again

murphy_bob_hof.jpgHad a nice chat this morning with Dave Howard, the Mets' Grand Poobah of Business Related Stuff - and former quarterback at one of those Half Hollow Hills Highs (East, I think).

Among other things, I asked about the status of the Mets' discussions regarding a new radio contract now that their deal with WFAN is up.

"Good question," he said. "We have had an interesting competitive period of negotiations. There were two other stations that have expressed strong interest that have made offers. I think we’ll know relatively soon."

Howard wouldn't say what the two other contenders are or characterize the likelihood of the Mets returning to WFAN.

But I believe one of the two suitors was WNYM-AM (970). I also believe the Mets will end up back on WFAN, as I wrote a few weeks back.

Why would the Mets even consider 970 even though historically, and a lot of people who are young don't know this, they were so bad during part of the 60's that none of the major stations wanted to carry their games and during 1969, indeed their games were on 970, a station with a very weak signal. I believe a guy named Bob Brown did the pre and post...perhaps they considered 970 as a return to their history.

But seriously, they would have to be bonkers to consider any station other than WFAN; perhaps WABC (who certainly wouldn't want to give up their fascistic shows with the like of Sean Hannity and Mark Levin or perhaps WOR, which at one time carried Brooklyn Dodger games with Red Barber and helped pave the way for the Dodgers to appear on channel 9 during their last years of existance (of course the franchise masquerading as the Dodgers on the left coast is an imposter organization; the Dodgers ceased to exist on 08 October 1957) where they televised every single home game and 2/3 of the road games with an additional 11 road games played in New York televised by the Giants both of which stations (WOR and WABC) are clear channel 50,000 watts while 970 and 1050 most assuredly are not...(and if you could follow that run on sentence, more power to you!)

I wouldn't be surprised if WABC put in a bid for the Mets contract. WABC's program director quit last week -- the Yankees got chased off 77 during his tenure -- and a new PD could be more amenable to having a big league ballclub on the station.

The Mets on WOR sounds far-fetched. WOR dropped New Jersey Nets basketball in order to carry Michael Savage.
