Hockey was, is and always will be the best sport
No matter what you cynics might think, I promise I will not be a shill for MSG, the Knicks or the Rangers this winter, no matter who signs my paychecks.
Still, I just turned to MSG and feel compelled to share some joyous news about something I discovered there:
It's hockey season!

why do you say that? for me, nothing in the world beats an nfl sunday, they are always very special.hockey is never special.
THEN WHY DON"T YOU BLOG FOR HOCKEY NEWS FOUR EYES?
Four eyes? Wow. That's old school. Haven't heard that since the Ford Administration, A. FRIEND! Anyway, as I've written before, I would happily blog for the Hockey News and was in fact offered a job as an editor there in 1982 before getting turned down because of my lack of Canadian citizenship. Didn't have a Molson for 15 years in protest.
IF YOU WERE A BLOGGER FOR THE HOKEY NEWS YOU WOULD BE OUT OF A JOB SINCE NOBODY READS IT.
More good Hockey News, NHL Network will be showing Hockey Night in Canada, in HD, every Saturday Night this season. Sources say Cablevision is adding NHL Network in HD on 10/16.
"There are three sports: bullfighting, mountain climbing and auto racing. The rest are mere games"-Ernest Hemingway
Any chance of Verizon FIOS adding the NHL Network/Center Ice packages. But at least it has VVH-TV with CFL games.
hockey you've got to be kidding me. we don't live in canada we live in america. in hockey when they fight they dance and hug a bunch of homos. also the only thing in hockey that's black is the puck and they hit it so.......
matt, you are an idiot.
Neil,
Congrats on getting through nearly three whole blog posts without mentioning your racist and sexist heroes Craig Cartoon and Barney Rubble Egosian. I'm sure you think the Nobel Prize is coming to you as reward for showing such restraint.
It does raise an interesting question, however:
I'm wondering if there's more white, cold empty space
a. Between Craig Cartoon's ears
b. In Sarah Palin's heart
c. in a hockey rink
d. In the comments section of one of your blog posts about how hard you work, some crush you had in 1973, or about Cornell.
You used to be the Best. Then you became buddies with Chernoff.
Wonder what his name rhymes with?
Neil,
What is more likely to happen: Cherny drops the ball and causes the Mets to leave WFAN or Cherny becomes Francesa's pupphet and breaks up the morning show or this "war" will end by this Monday?
If Chernoff was smart, he'd get rid of Carton, replace him with Carlin, can the warm up spot and have the overnight host stay until 6am...
But what do I know, as Francesa says, "he's the pro".
Btw, Hockey is the best sport, Neil is correct. Also, Neil, can you confirm anything about Cablevision adding the NHL Network on 10/16, will it be on iO? Or, will i need that damn sports package?
You know how hockey is NOT the best sport? Because every single hockey fan always has the need to tell you, implore you, hell, make HEADLINES, saying how their sport is the best sport. Thou Doest Protesteth Too Much, Methinks.
Did anyone ask which was the best sport? Nope. But hockey fans need to bring it up and tell you, anyway.
The numbers don't lie, Neil. In that major poll conducted a year and a half ago of favorite sports...remember where hockey finished? The Top 5 were Pro Football, MLB, NBA, College Football and College Basketball. Was hockey 6th? Nope. 7th? Uh-uh. 8th? Nada. 9th? 10th? 11th? 12? No, nuh-uh, nah. You mean i came in behind horseracing and NASCAR? Yup. 13th? No. 14? Uh-uh....
So what it's near the bottom of the list, we still like it. Good games this weekend in Prague.
I didn't know Francesa posted here! Expert analysis!
*handwave*
The NHL Network is already in the SportsPak on Cablevision, so I would assume that wouldn't change for the addition of the HD version.
I hate hockey. oh joy, lets watch guys skate in circles for over an hour hitting a puck around. Not my idea of a great time
Neil, Could you ask your bosses at Cablevision why they will again this year allow the Rangers to be bumped from their own network in the Albany area so that MSG can instead carry every Sabres game? And why their customer service has refused for three years running to give any response at all to that question?
Nice post, Jeff, and so true. Hockey fans really are the only ones that constantly yell about how their sport is the best one. Ever. Yes, that's overly defensive.
Hockey's unwatchable on TV. It's great to watch in person at the arena, but it really does not lend itself to TV. Puck's too small, difficult to follow on the screen. And so many key angles of passes and shots are blocked by the very architecture of the boards around the rink.
Yeah yeah puck's too small, can't follow the action, yawwwn.
NASCAR is just as bad. Please explain what's so appealing about putting men in fast cars and watching them make left turns between concrete walls....And then there's the NBA.....
Whatever...
I am not Neil but here's a good answer.
FYI to Pat above re: Sabres MSG vs. Rangers MSG in Albany ... it's a league issue having to do with territories ... much like the battles in corners of Connecticut re: Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Jets, Giants and Patriots telecasts that viewers fight, sometimes in this blogt. It's the leagues ... not the cable operators. GIve the NHL a call. They have spanking new offices on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. Some call it 1185 Avenue of the Americas. Nice NHL Store down the street, too. And they've got a new director of media relations in former 'Snooze beat writer John Dellapina.
The Sabres claim upstate [anything above Ulster and Dutchess counties on either side of the Hudson]. And especially the Albany TV market.
Those of you with lots of money to throw about can buy a full sports package from DirecTV where you'll get all flavors of MSG ... along with ESPN, YES, SNY, etc. Cable guys can get the NHL Center [re] Ice package.
And the NFL Sunday Ticket package ... the holy grail of all extra fee sports packages is still DirecTV only.
Now just lemme put on the foil for my league-wide tribute to Paul Newman ... and hockey season really opens Friday when the Rangers play the team with the second-best NHL uniform in the US - the Chicago Black Hawks.
