Michael Phelps to host 'Saturday Night Live' Saturday
Thanks to our friends at Deadspin for this link to a compilation of jock-related clips from "Saturday Night Live," in honor of Michael Phelps' hosting gig this weekend.
Peyton Manning and LeBron James probably were the best jock/actors I can recall hosting, but given the extremely low expectations going in, I thought Derek Jeter did an excellent job. (He did not make the video cut on the link above.)
What's your favorite SNL/athlete memory?
(I will be talking to Phelps Thursday. If you have a question for him, please submit it now.)

"Michael,
Congrats on the whole swimming scenario. Are you aware that the Rabid Racist Russo Dawg recently went off free radio here in NY? No? Well, because in New York, he's ... He used to be ... Anyway, I can get you Craig Cartoon's autograph... Would you like that?"
"Hey Mike, you know I'm in bed with Chernoff, right? No, not literally! Gee whiz, do you read my blog? It's where I support racebaiting, womenhating, talentless D-Bags like myself. Anyway, what's it like wearing those bathing suits?"
Does Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson count? His episode was hilarious. He did play college football at Miami, after all.
Without a doubt, the best athlete moment on SNL was the skit that aired December 13, 1997 and featured the following: Todd Hundley, Scott Rolen, Mark Wohlers, Marty Cordova, Jeff Fassero, Gregg Jefferies, Mark Grudzielanek, Rondell White, Todd Zeile, Russ Davis, Cliff Floyd, David Howard, Mike Sweeney and Gerald Williams.
The premise of the sketch was Chris Kattan as a child having a dream in which his favorite ball players appear. What follows is cigar smoking, gambling, a keg being tapped, and one of the players (i forget whom) telling Kattan his mon (played by host Helen Hunt) was HOT!
One of my all time favs, I wish SNL archieved that skit on it's site.
Nice pix of Fran Tarkenton.
I particularly liked John Madden, way back when.
Question for Michael: I was just wondering if he had heard about Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson claiming that he could beat Michael in any swimming event and how he felt about that.
How about Joe Montana as Stu the roommate in 1987?
Baltimore is eagerly anticipating Phelps’ return home. Two separate events are planned for October 4th. One in his hometown of Towson, MD and then a big celebration, including other MD Olympic athletes, down at Fort McHenry. For details go to www.baltimore.org/phelps.
