WatchDog urges financial geniuses to turn to poetry

tacoma.jpgLook: I feel for the rank-and-file employees and small stockholders who have been hurt or will be hurt by the self-immolation of the American financial system.

But if there is a silver lining in all this perhaps it will be that for the first time in a generation or two, our best and brightest young people will stop aspiring to careers in moving piles of money around and instead develop alternate energy sources or cure cancer or build bridges or write poetry.

The summer I graduated from college, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 777, and among my group of friends those with the highest-paying, most prestigious job offers were . . . engineers.

No, really.

Returning to those days wouldn't be such a bad thing, would it?

Yes, that would be nice, but unfortunately we live in a country where the majority of the people believe that the earth suddenly appeared 6000 years ago and the scientific method is just a trope invented by the cultural elite to put "real people" down.
