Friday comment contest winner

lg_guerrero_all_sub.jpgThis week's comment award goes to Katie in the wake of the debate sparked by a columnist critiquing an ESPN reporter's attire and behavior in the Cubs' locker room.

It was difficult to get male commentors to take this subject seriously. That's why WatchDog Nation is happy to have representatives of all genders! Take it away, Ms. Katie:

In all seriousness, it's a very tough line that women in sports media have to walk. Look, realistically you're not going to get on TV, no matter how knowledgeable you are, unless you're good looking--preferably very good looking. But you also have to be aware that you are only allowed to push those good looks--which your employer seemingly wants to highlight--so far, and maybe the line isn't always clear. Sometimes it seems like a no win situation. I remember hearing some guys on a sports radio station snarkily talking about a female sideline reporter who looked like she'd "had some work done" (an eye job, maybe some botox, to be exact). But if she hadn't had said work done, they would probably have been the first to comment on her not looking great, or maybe her employers would have noted it and just shifted her off the broadcast. It's like you have to do everything you can to look good, but then you can also get criticized for doing everything you can to look good.

KATIE???

hmmm....

WELL DONE KATIE.

I just wandered over here to check out what's been going on in media watch snarkiness (it's either that or do work) and saw that I am the Friday comment contest winner!! I am blushing. I'd like to thank my agent, my HP notebook, my spotty wireless connection, Marcel Proust, Artemis, and of course, Brett Favre.

I think it's time Newsday/Cablevision created a Woman's Sports blog here, hosted by... of all things.....A WOMAN.

Scanning the left column here I only see one blog singularly hosted by a woman and it's the Yankees blog. And to Kat's credit she does a great job in keeping it all Yankees.
But the rest of the blogroll resembles a smoke filled antechamber in a 19th Century Senate.
And, let's face it, GUYS, many of these blogs get a little randy from time to time (GUILTY as charged, God I hate growing up Irish/Catholic).

Newsday is blessed with some quality female writers....Johnette Howard, Katie Strang and Laura Albanese to name a few.
Cablevision is burdened by a recent litigious history and a reputation that I am sure they would love to change and/or discard.

There's a lot of "Women's Sports News" out there.
A blog hosted by a woman focused on women's athletics and overall participation in the sporting universe would be a win/win for all involved.

(And who knows.....maybe the Bristol Bombshell would stop in and say Hi from time to time----okay, yes, I CAN be shallow and self-serving from time to time).

It's 2008.
Let's go BOYS.
Step out and dance on the glass floor.

Just my opinion....in a sensitive and caring 2008 way.
