Beach volleyball has best unis, but not best action

george-bush_beach.jpgYeah, I watched the women's beach volleyball final/wet t-shirt contest last night, and sure, I appreciate the comically skimpy uniforms as much as the next feller.

But the shame is that regular volleyball, or whatever non-beach volleyball is called, always has been under-appreciated as a spectator sport. And now it has been shoved even farther into the shadows by the bikini-fied version, which is far less interesting to watch aside from its unis.

Oh, well. Did I mention I enjoy the beach volleyball cheerleaders as well?

hey Neil,

It's time for you to yell at the kids on your lawn again!

Neil,
Accept this as a qualified observation from someone who spent the better part of his daughter's middle school, HS and college volleyball career developing an incurable case of lifetime bleacher butt.
First of all, the beach vball unis may be skimpy and revealing, but the spandex employed in the hardwood version of the game is far more intriguing and effectively more attractive to many hardcore spectators with an eye for the game. And I base this observation after years of exhaustive research and interviews with other "fathers of the game".
It's what I have been told. (phew, good thing I got that qualifier out of the way).

Secondly, beach volleyball is by far the most physically challenging and demanding of the two sports. VERY FEW hardwood players can effectively make the transition to the beach version of the game. The beach players are the cream of the crop.
It is the elite version of the sport.
(Kinda like writing for the NY Times instead of Newsday).

Finally, I don't think many people realize the true significance of what Ruth and Jordan accomplished by winning the gold in Olympics. Not just the gold, but these women have not been defeated in 108 consecutive matches dating back over a year.
That is beyond legendary for this sport (and many others)
And they are just beating the best in the world (for decades the United States has NOT been the best), indeed they are DESTROYING the best in the world.
Phelps shmelps......I have been most impressed with Ruth and Jordan during these Olympics.

Just my opinion.
