Giants fans asked to help finance new football palace

money-pile.jpgI was assigned to write a news article for the Friday newspaper on the Giants' personal seat license offering, which can be found here, with a sidebar here, and a box here, and a chart here.

But originally I was going to write an opinion piece about this. It was emotional and brilliantly written and persuasively argued. A summary: This stinks.

Speaking of PSLs, check out the shockingly civil chat this morning between WFAN's Craig Carton and Giants president John Mara on the subject.

Don't worry Jets fans. I've been stockpiling many of your phone numbers and e-mail addresses so I can leap into action when it's your turn next month. Please spend the next couple of weeks thinking of colorful rants I can quote in the paper!

Neil,
Which station is currently leading the race in being the Mets flagship radio station?

i don't know

Someone has to explain the need for a new stadium. I haven't been to Giants Stadium since 2004 and the only other NFL stadium I have been to is M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. However, based on my limited experience in NFL stadiums, I certainly did not see a need for a new stadium. What is/was so bad about Giants Stadium that forced the need to build a new $1B stadium? It just seems like a colossal waste of money.

Peter,

The current stadium does not have enough club seats and luxury boxes for all the corporate suits and their clients. It's a great stadium for the average fan but we don't count anymore. The new stadium and it's price structure will move all the real fans to the end zones and upper deck so rich non fans can be wined and dined in the best seats. I'll go from watching games in section 109 to watching them on a big HDTV that I'll buy with the PSL money. I'm sure they get enough suckers to pay the prices so the games remain sold out so they can be televised. I refuse to pay those prices and will not downgrade to lesser seats.

How come a 32 year old building is deteriorating? Haven't the Giants or New Jersey taken care of it? The Empire State Building is more than twice as old. Is it deteriorating? Do the Giants and Jets plan to maintain You-Suckers-paid-for-it-through-the-Nose stadium so it doesn't have to be replaced in 2042?

Thanks Rob - I guess I should have known that it had to do with luxury suites. What a pain - 76,000 are ignored to please, what, 1K? Gosh, that is frustrating on thousands of levels.

You'll love games in HD - the game will take 3 hours, not 6 - the food and beer will be cheaper and the lines to the bathroom will be short. However, I honestly do feel for the people who have invested 20, 30, 40, etc. years to either team. It's a kick in the gut for those who have stuck with either team through some both the bad and good times.

My friend and some of the people that sit around him have had their tickets since 1960. They moved with them from Yankee Stadium, to the Yale Bowl, to Shea and then to Giants Stadium. There were many really bad teams during the 70's but they stuck it out. Their thanks is a $20,000 PSL to keep their lower 20 yard line seats.
