I was saddened to learn the annual Giants coaches vs. writers softball game in Albany was cancelled Wednesday because of rain, believed to be the first time ever - or at least in recent memory.

That means another 12 months of waiting until the writers can end a long losing streak.

If I weren't so modest, I'd note the last time the writers won was in 1999, helped by two homers by . . . me.

But I am modest, so I'll leave it at this: The coaches lucked out.

I guarantee the writers will win in '09, in what might be the Giants' final camp in Albany.
