Bobby Murcer was a mensch
I had the pleasure of talking to Bobby Murcer only four or five times on the media beat, but that was more than enough to appreciate what a profoundly classy man he was.
That and the testimony of dozens of people who knew him much better than I did.
And reading his recent autobiography. You should read it, too.
I was honored to talk to him about the book less than two months ago. Here is that column.
Here is Yogi Berra on Murcer from the book's foreword:
"If you don't know Bobby Murcer, that's too bad. I don't know too many people I'd rather know even if I already know them."

That's the greatest quote I've ever heard. Fitting that it comes from Yogi and is about a person that I have never heard a bad thing about. From what I have heard, and from seeing Joe Girardi well up like that, I cannot think of there being a classier human being than Bobby Murcer. RIP
Neil- it stinks that a story like this pulls you off of your vacation. Bobby will be truly missed, I cried today when I heard the news. RIP Bobby
Neil,
We've lost one of the great ones. We have to do better. All of us.
You're the Best. Have a great vay-kay!
This has been bothering me a lot. Moreso than when Mickey Mantle died because when I watched his "I'm no hero" press conference, I could see he was close to death. Bobby, up until recently, looked and acted like he beat the cancer he had. He had a wonderful life and was truly a success and role model for everyone. R.I.P.
My all time favorite baseball player as a kid growing up in NY. An absolute delight to listen to in the booth for the last 23 years and just a wonderful human being. It's not how long you live but how well you live and Bobby showed us how. Thanks for everything...
