I love this description from Carlo Rotella, who used it in reference to boxing writers in a piece about Floyd Mayweather Jr. but might just as well have been referring to sportswriters of every type:
"Sentimentalists who think they're cynics."
That's dead-on, whether my colleagues and I like to admit it or not. Not that there's anything wrong with that . . . most of the time.

Funny... when thinking about the modern day sports columnist (read: guys like Mushnick and Lupica) what comes to mind is "Cynics who think they're sentamentalists."
