Michael Kay, YES play-by-play man, calls Mets 'gutless'
Michael Kay is walking the tightrope again on 1050!
He called the Mets "gutless" for the "lunacy'' of their reported stance on Willie Randolph, giving him the weekend to save his job.
So, naturally, a caller wondered whether he would ever talk about Yankees ownership like that.
"Find tapes of when they let Andy Pettitte sign with the Astros,'' Kay said, a reference he often uses when accused of not criticizing the Yankees.
The caller then accused Kay of "measured'' criticism when it comes to the Yankees.
"If they’re gutless I’ll call them gutless,'' Kay said. "I haven’t seen them be gutless about anything."
As I've written many times and said to Michael directly . . . I have no problems with Kay as a sports talk host or as YES' play-by-play man, but doing both jobs puts him in an impossible position.

He should just do New Yorkers a favor and leave town.
Why is he so infatuated with the Mets and SNY? Is what the Mets are doing vis-a-vis Randolph, or more accuratly, what is being reported they are doing to him, any different than the contast Joe Torre firing watches? Sheesh, talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
What report is he going off of? I read a report on ESPN.com that said Randolph will not be fired and certainly not this weekend, regardless of what happens against Texas. Perhaps he shouldn't take such a strong stand without actually knowing all the facts and getting the correct story. I can understand if he doesn't have enough time to do the research since he has decided to work himself to the brink with two demanding jobs.
Full disclosure - I think Michael Kay is absolutely terrible as an announcer and competely useless as a radio voice, so my opinion might be slightly biased. Plus, I'm a Mets fan and I really don't need anyone associated with the Yankees to give me their opinion on Mets-related matters.
I love listening to Michael Kay...he is great. But you should know his biases going in. He is very passive aggressive towards Joe Torre. And if Jeff Wilpon was as talkative as Hank Steinbrenner, we'd hear all the time how Jeff isn't helping his team any.
Thanks for listening to Kay so others don't need to.
If we're providing disclosures, I might as well add that I agree with Peter that "Michael Kay is absolutely terrible as an announcer and competely useless as a radio voice," and just wanted to add that he is also an awful human being.
Michael Kay is becoming more like Mike Francesa every day.
When Kay gets angry he is like my mother. Full-fledged NY accent going and I wouldn't be surprised if he doubled in size and turned green.
His show is a bit rough to listen to at times. They (Kay, Lagrecca) really are not the smartest sports analysts. Everything is preaching from a pulpit, especially with Kay and LaGrecca. They are always so outraged at anything as if they are like so morally just. Also they frequently avoid talking about sports, and are always so gimmicky. I love it when Kay is outraged, screaming and acting like a baby, then proceeds to say "Hey fans, listen up for the next ESPN promotion.....", its a rather funny and awkward transition that he does very frequently. Overall he and the people on his show do not seem to know a great deal about anything outside of baseball. Kays call screeners seem to protect him as well. People used to get on all the time and comment on his tremendous head. I no longer hear those comments and anytime I tried to call with a contrary point to him, I was told thank you and hung up on.
As a Yankee fan, I listen to Kay once in a while because odds are he's talking Yankees. But he's a changed man; he doesn't joke about himself like he used to. As danny r. alluded to, callers and LaGrecca (sp.?) used to razz him about being chubby, nearly 50 and single, and having a huge head (he was at an ESPN event at a Mexican restaurant, and someone said that on his head, a sombrero looked like a yarmulke). No more of that. He takes himself too seriously now, like his buddy Francesa down the dial. And it's funny when gets pissed off, he'll tell a caller "you sound like that guy who called and said..." as though we all memorize every show and know exactly who he's talking about.
How many Yankee games does Kay actually do?
Jennifer,
About 120. I don't get that though. A premiere job like Yankees TV PBP would surely do more games. For what? More Joba Chamberlain installments on YESterdays? Centerstage episode with the Wu-Tang Clan? Sure his show interferes with his PBP job, he pre-records an hour no thanks to the tanking of SAS's show. Personally think 1050 should just sack Tirico and put Kay's show in place from the 1 PM to 4 PM hour and put another local guy in there.
Michael Kay would be selling pretzels if it wasn't for guys like me. -hand wave-
