Happy 25th anniversary of the trade that brought Keith Hernandez to the Mets, and eventually SNY.
If it hadn't happened, Neil Allen would be hanging out in the booth with Gary and Ronnie these days! Maybe.
Anyway, here is an interesting story from Newsday's own Steve Marcus about the backdrop to the trade, and how the deal might have been derailed if the Mets had been aware of Hernandez's off-field troubles.

Has ESPN Classic updated the "You Can't Blame" episode on Don Denkinger and the 1985 World Series when Hernandez notes the Cardinals haven't won a world series since they traded him? Maybe they can do one pointing out the Mets haven't since they named Hernandez captain in 1987 (Gary Carter was so jealous they had to name him co-captain the next year).
Neil,
When will the Mets do the right thing and retire 17?
You're the BEST!
