Friday comment contest winner
I spent all day waiting for the perfect Friday comment contest winner to drop into my lap to properly wrap up an eventful week of news about Mike Francesa and Chris Russo, Michael Strahan and Jeremy Shockey, Bob Papa and the NFL Network, etc.
Not to mention send me out in style for a bit of time off.
It arrived in the top of the seventh inning of Game 1 of the Mets-Yankees double dip, after the SNY announcers discussed what a nice job Alex Rodriguez is doing playing third base.
Take it away, Gary Cohen:
"Of course the thing that the Yankees never talk about is the fact that A-Rod is still twice the shortstop that Jeter is, but you're not allowed to say that here."
Yikes! Fightin' words!
Someone tell Michael Kay to compare A-Rod and David Wright tonight. See ya.

This is where Gary really annoys me. Why does he need to say that? He jumps at any opportunity to knock the Yankees. While he's probably right, he doesn't need to talk about that.
Cohen needs to shut his annoying trap.
What Gary Cohen fail realize is when A-Rod came to the Yanks, he volenteer to play 3rd base. The Yanks never ask Jeter switch positions.
We forget the fact that Cohen is a Mets' fan and the fact they pwned the Yankees in the first game probably wasn't enough satisfaction for him. Since it doesn't happen often.
Is Gary Cohen an alias for Gary Carter? Does he tell you that Derek Jeter hustles and Jose Reyes and David Wright don't for a team that has gone 95-97 since June 1 of 2007? When they lead the Mets to 4 world championships and 14 straight playoffs, let Gary Cohen know.646
Nice to see all the Yankee apologists posting. Gary was dead on, and is 100x the announcer that annoying queen Michael Kay is
We're not comparing broadcasters here. We're talking about an inane comment by a broadcaster who is supposed to be better than that. Cohen (and Howie Rose, for that matter) hate the Yankees with every breath. That's not an opinion; it's a fact.
While A-Rod is an exceptional player offensively and defensively, he volunteered to play third base, thus Gary's comments are moot. This is not about the Yankees' "apologists." Comparing Kay and Cohen is a typical Mets fan comment.

Key word in Cohen's comment....."still".
That is just ignorantly wrong and pathetically stupid.
A-Rod MAY have been twice the shortstop when he came over, but I dare say that if A-Rod started playing SS for the Yanks tomorrow, he would be a butcher boy in that position for about 6 weeks until he got the feel for the position back.
A-Rod hasn't played shortstop in what? 5 years?
Nobody, NOBODY Gary Cohen, even A-Rod, steps into the shortstop position after a 5 year hiatus and becomes twice the player of ANY current shortstop in MLB.
They must have been handing out stupid pills in the Met's Press Box today.
Well apparently shutting us out didn't make you guys keep your pacifiers in your traps. Grow up!
I could cry until the cows came home about how biased Sam Rosen is for his Devils and all the stupid comments he had on the Devils but I do the right thing and change the channel to watch Doc. Why can't you Yankee fans do the same. Oh yeah, you have Michael Kay and the dynamic duo of Waldman and Sterling as options.
I love how Mets fans defend Cohen by criticizing the Yankees announcers. Cohen is jealous of the Yanks and that's a fact and always goes out of his way to knock the team. He needs to keep his personal agenda out of his broadcasts.
I'm not decrying any bias on Cohen's part, CMG, I am in no position to make that claim as I rarely see Cohen's work.
I was merely commenting on Cohen's statement at face value for what it was. An ingnorantly pathetic assessment of A-Rod's abilities.
If anything Cohen was showing too much bias and appreciation for what A-Rod can do right now.
To declare that A-Rod can simply tear his 3rd base jersey off right now and display a Super-Shortstop jersey underneath is naive.
Now pardon me while I put the nipple back on my beer bottle and get ready for today's matchup.
Should be a dandy.....Pettite Vs. Santana.
I think give Rodriguez a week, he could be better than Jeter again at SS.
Also, for those on the Yankee side trashing Cohen as a Yankee hater (which is true), remember that Michael Kay never ducks a chance to slam the Mets either.
Jeff, you need to read. Cohen was talking about how he feels A-Rod was/is twice the shortstop as Jeter. It has nothing to do with Yankee announcers and surprisingly he has a good relationship with Michael Kay.
