Cubs telecast goes retro; Mets, Yanks should try this

chance1908.bmpOh, boy. More drama at Shea today.

While I'm waiting for it to play out so I can finish my newspaper column, here is a link to a good idea from WGN in Chicago that YES and SNY should copy before Yankee and Shea close for good.

(Is the U.S. Open over yet?)

Neil,

What's the big deal with a retro broadcast when you WFAN in America's biggest media market peddling racist and misogynist perspectives ON A DAILY BASIS?!

When will you give up on the YouTube nostalgia and give us readers the respect we deserve?

Thanks, Neil. You're the Best.

I just got one question.....about these old retro broadcasts of these baseball games.....

Was the second guy announcing the game in the TV booth called "a color" commentator.....or a "black and white" commentator?

The old SportsChannel New York did a retro telecast a few years ago ... same year Fox did a super-retro telecast, using production techniques from the '50's through today.
[B+W 2 cameras, B+W 3 cameras w/telephoto from center field, B+W with instant replay, color w/6 cameras, etc. etc.]
The SportsChannel Mets telecast was a decent facsimile of a typical 1970's Metsie Channel 9 effort .. down to the graphics and a fake "slate" to indicate a fake "loss of transmission" from Shea.

YES doesn't think anything happened before 1996.

BTW, when I type that something stuck on to me on Michael Kay's Tuesday show. I heard it streaming online. He basically said ESPN should not interview Bill Russell on the basis of his age, slow reactions, slow drawl, and "hyena"-like laugh. Ageist, a bit? His point rung hollow since LaGreca said nothing and tried to change the subject. Now I know why Scooter never made a special appearance in the broadcast.

The real question is: was is still in HD?

It was in HD black and white.

It was exceptionally well done. I only saw the first inning and a half, and I guess they went back to color after a couple innings, but it was great. I really didn't want to leave.

And I'm 27, so not some crusty old dude who wishes it was still 1948 and newspapers mattered.

It's not the "paper" Justin T....it's the "news'...and the fact that you are part of a minority from the LOL generation that can still read the news, translate it and put a cohesive sentence together in a blog to talk about it.

Good for you.
