I really, really hate cheesy historical reenactments in documentaries.

So that's one strike against "Jackie Mitchell: The Girl Who Struck Out Babe Ruth," replaying at 8:30 p.m. Sunday on MSG Plus.

Other than that, though, it's worth a look at a mostly forgotten tale from the early spring of 1931, when the Yankees visited Chattanooga for an exhibition on the way back from spring training and watched two of their superstars go down on strikes against a 17-year-old girl.

But was it on the level?

The highlight is not the reenactments but the snippet of rare, actual footage of Mitchell pitching to Ruth, who is called out on the kind of high strike no pitcher would get these days . . . or maybe even in those days. The Babe threw down his bat in disgust over the call.
