Here is the complete version of my Friday newspaper column, including items about a new SNY show, Michael Kay's hectic schedule and bowling on CBS.
Also make sure to check out this interesting supplementary material for the lead item on Joe Girardi, as well as the comments posted below this truncated version of the column, in which readers bash me for writing about Girardi's media relations, a subject allegedly of no interest to fans.
This happens every time I write about coaches and players dealing with the media, and I am not offended in the least. I am well aware my job is silly. I just wish you wouldn't point that out to my editors.
I'm out until Monday. No blogging. No column. No nuthin'. Family matters to attend to.
You will be in good hands with the many other fine blogs here, most of which do cover matters of concern to fans.
Think about it: As a business, newspapers are facing the most trying times of their existence. But there never has been a better time to be a reader of the material newspapers produce.
There's more of it than ever, and it's mostly free. I don't know how long this model can be sustained, but enjoy it while you can.

Just make sure you get to watch the only good NA$CAR track in action Saturday: Darlington. The Lady in Black. The track too Tough to Die is revitalized after being down to one date now held the day before Mother's Day. Watch Dale Earnhardt Jr make buddy-buddy with his new BFF Kyle "The Shrub" Busch. More fun than the time Joe Pepitone turned on his hairdryer that was filled with talcum powder and came out looking like an Italian George Washington.
kay said to a caller on wednesday that i dont like joe torre for personal reasons im not getting into. the caller then says kay was acting like a 12 year old and should grow up. more went on but kay was definitely heated and he almost cursed.
kay is a phony though...he says his dream job is to be the yankees playbyplay guy (which he is of course) but then he misses like 40 games a year because he doesnt like certain cities
please
Very interesting piece Neil. I think Girardi hasn't been very good with the media so far and by extension the fans. I don't know if it is his idea, or the organization's but handling injury reports like the Kremlin circa 1980 is not doing anyone any good. Cynical people (not me of course, someone else) could conclude that the Yankees and their doctors don't know what they are doing by the way they have handled injuries so far this year. Joe is a smart guy and he once was a member of the media, he should do a better job here.
And isn't it funny how Kay starts knocking Joe Torre once he is outside of the Yankee organization? I never seem to hear him say anything negative about anyone while they are in the organization.
Peter T: Thanks for the note and kind words. In fairness, M. Kay did criticize Torre on his radio show last year, but he admittedly has turned up the vitriol a bit this season.
Kay on more than one occasion had to be put on a 15 second delay by Joey Salvia for his own personal cursing. He sounds like Michael Savage actually when he yells, not politically, but just in the voice.
Kay and Torre in my opinion started to get heated after I believe during the 2003 season when Kay said to ESPN that "Torre is trying to get fired" or something of that nature. Not sure that St. Joe really liked that opinion. Kay likes Girardi and probably rooted for only Donnie Baseball more to get the job.
I wasn't aware of the Neil, thanks for mentioning it. I don't know if it YES policy or the announcers, but I wouldn't mind hearing some criticism of the Yankees from time to time on their airwaves. I think most of the fans can take it.
Neil Best - never on phone company tv.
Your newest corporate cousin won't be Mushnick or even Raissman ... but Trautwig.

Lemme lay a little Guitar Jimmy on ya ....
Wow, what a treat working for the Dolans, an even worse choice than Murdoch! Maybe Greg Logan can become the GM of the Knicks and actually make them work things out with salary caps and coaches and such.
Jeez. Did anyone watch the Yankees game on Fox today? That had to be one of the worst broadcast games ever. They would show Chris Britton and say he was Joba Chamberlain. I think they called Abreu Giambi. Did they have any idea what was going on?
FOX is horrible at broadcasting. He's the job description for being a baseball or football announcer for that network. Have a famous father or be relevant 15 years ago.
Neil,
I fear for your future with Dolan and company.. please keep it real!!
I'm so disappointed that no one speculated that you were quiet b/c you were at the Bush wedding.
What's going on here?
You weren't, of course (at the Bush wedding).
