Look, I understand trainer Larry Jones was distraught after his horse, Eight Belles, died after the Kentucky Derby and thus deserves to be cut a break for anything that came out of his mouth as he spoke to reporters.
Still, his last line here is just plain silly, and illustrates the divide between horse racing people and non-horse racing people:
“These things are our family. We put everything into them that we have, and they give us everything they have. They put their lives on the line, and she was glad to do it.”
Glad to do it? Can I see the liability waiver she signed?

Too literally an interpetation, perhaps? I think he was stating that she loved to run full out and compete.

I'm sure that during your stay there you must have seen some sled dog teams or possibly visited the home/dog farm of a musher.
Those animals live for running. Same is true for thoroughbred horses. It is their raison d'etre.

I thought it was particularly insensitive/disgusting last year when we had round the clock coverage on the status of Barbaro (not to mention hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on him) at a time when 10 U.S. soldiers were being killed each day in Iraq.
