Michael Kay just said Vin Scully will be his guest on 1050 ESPN at 4 p.m.
That in itself is worth nothing here in case you want to listen. But it also reminded me I keep forgetting to give you the ticket info for the event Tuesday at which Fordham will honor Scully for his lifetime achievements.
Click below for the news release and ticket particulars.
WFUV Radio's (90.7 FM, wfuv.org) two most cherished alumni -- legendary Dodgers voice Vin Scully and CBS News icon and Sunday Morning host Charles Osgood -- will be presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards that will forever bear their names at the station's inaugural spring gala at Sotheby's auction house on Tuesday night, April 29, in New York City.
And their presenters at the benefit for Fordham University's National Public Radio station, are illustrious in their own right. Scully will be presented by his good friend and former Brooklyn Dodgers' right hander Ralph Branca, while Osgood will be handed his hardware by CBS Early Show host Harry Smith. Grammy Award-winning artist Emmylou Harris will perform at the gala, and will also be cited with the WFUV Sound & Vision Award for her accomplishments and contributions to the music, which will be presented by Oscar Award-winning producer/director/writer Jonathan Demme.
For tickets contact Arienne Orozco, WFUV Benefit Office, 212-675-9474 or aorozco@sualtd.com.
Following in Scully’s enormous footsteps, WFUV products in sports broadcast excellence include: CW11 sports anchor Sal Marchiano, play by play artists Mike Breen (Knicks), Michael Kay (Yankees), Bob Papa (Giants), Chris Carrino (Nets), Spero Dedes (Lakers) and Charlie Slowes (Nationals), WFAN's Talkin' Baseball host Ed Randall, and ESPN’s Tony Reali, just to name a few.

Fordham Ram grad helping a fellow alumni it seems. Along with Kay and Scully, Spiro Dedes of the LA Lakers radio team, Mike Breen, Chris Carrino of the Nets, Bob Papa, John Andariese, John Giannone, and Stat Boy from PTI all went to Fordham. That's a lot of announcers. I know Kansas State has a lot of announcers who went there too but I think Fordham possibly has the upper-hand on announcers of any American university.
CMG,
Fordham certainly has established itself as a, if not THE, leader in producing quality sportscasters through the years.
And I can think of no finer candidate for a Lifetime Acheivement Award than Vin Scully.
With that said......
As a Manhattan Jasper Alum ....
I must add....
with apologies to Neil and all others with refined sensitivities...
that.....
Rams Eat Chit.
I'm at Union College so I have no biases toward that school. Just thought it would be an interesting observation.
All good CMG.
It IS noteworthy to mention that about Fordham. They DO have an outstanding track record of producing great broadcasters. (although I've always wondered how they got the call letters for their radio station past the FCC).
But, as the product of the fine education bestowed upon me by the Catholic Christian Brothers of the Lassallian Tradition, I am OBLIGATED to respond to anything Fordham with the response in my comment.
It's our rendition of an outlaw Gregorian Chant.
Maybe Syracuse outdoes Fordham but not by many.
Upon further review Neil.....I have an ALASKAN connection with Ralph Branca.
Way back when in 1980...1st summer in AK...I was a Res Supervisor for NWA. Being a bad supervisor I was the only one on the phones one lonely Saturday night. A guy calls in to reconfirm his flight back to Columbus(? if I remember right) the next morning...
I say...."Last name?".
He says "Branca"
My radar goes up...I pull his record...sure enough...RALPH Branca..
So I says "Ralph Branca"?
He says...."Yes"
I say...."As in THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD, RALPH BRANCA?"
He laughs and says "Geezus I can't even get away from that up here in Alaska, yes that is me, one in the same".
We talked for about 10 minutes about baseball and baseball and baseball.
A class guy.
Just a side story.....but not as good as the one about my buddy at the airport who, while checking in C Everett Koop at the airport excused himself from the counter, ran to the gift shop, bought a pack of Marlboro's, ran back to the counter and had Mr. Koop autograph the pack across the Surgeon General's Warning.
Oh yeah, I forgot about 'Cuse. McDonough, Stockton, Costas, Siciliano, Marv, Glickman, Len Berman, Tirico, Castiglione, and Neumeier. Definately bigger names from there.
