Rod Carew inspires future middle-aged singles hitter
Buck Showalter returns to ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" starting Monday, the network announced today. I already knew that, though, from listening to him talk about it with Michael Kay on the radio the other day.
What I didn't know is that the show will be featuring a series of Hall of Famers as guest analysts, beginning with former Red Sox and Yankees star Wade Boggs before Sunday's Yanks-Bosox tilt.
Also scheduled for appearances are Juan Marichal (May 11), Phil Niekro (May 25) and Rod Carew (July 13).
Carew was my favorite hitter when I was a kid. I still base my softball stance on his, but it doesn't work as well as it did when he and I were both much younger.
Carew attended George Washington High in Manhattan, as did Manny Ramirez. But he famously showcased his talents at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx, which I think is gone now.
Something about a new baseball stadium. Sigh.
