Watchdog

I was looking at the list of most e-mailed Newsday stories when I came across the one about someone from my hometown who broke a 291-year-old world record to become the youngest professor ever.

This caused me to check out which sports stories made the list. They were a predictable collection of stuff of wide interest: two on the Giants draft, one on the Knicks coach search, one on Mr. McFadden (a top running back in the draft) and one on the Hank/Joba brouhaha.

This in turn caused me out of curiosity to check out The New York Times' most recent list of most e-mailed sports stories.

No. 1 was the buried David Ortiz jersey at the new Yankee Stadium. Fair enough. But check out the next four: a story about a new swimsuit that has caused world records to fall of late; tips from golf teachers for the average player; a feature on former Olympic marathon gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson; a piece on new concerns over danger at equestrian competitions.

I have nothing against The New York Times. Some of my best friends in the business work there. But it's, um, not for everyone.

By the way, welcome (in advance), Mr. Murdoch. I promise not to write much about equestrian sports if you buy us.
