Joe Gergen, Keith Hernandez, Arnold Palmer, Sox-Yanks
Here is my Friday newspaper column, in which I break the news that the Red Sox and Yankees are a popular TV attraction, get to the bottom of Keith Hernandez' new haircut, review a golf book and bid farewell to Newsday institution Joe Gergen.
The first time I talked to Gergen was at the 1985 Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium, when I awkwardly told him how much I enjoyed reading him growing up.
That night also was the first time I encountered Rick Reilly, then a cocky young scribe who either had just joined SI or was about to.
Reilly reportedly will make more money from ESPN this year than I have made in my entire career combined.

Best wishes and a wonderful retirement to Joe Gergen...
I am honored to say that I had the privilege to deliver his fine work to 40-50 households a day in 68-69.
This is no disrespect to any of the Newsday writers who look at this blog, but there is no way any of you could ever replace Joe Gergen and Jacobson, they were just legends.
thanks for posting about Joe, I must have missed his farewell column.
I do think Newsday still has some fine sportswriters, and its THE primary reason I still subscribe...
Sandy:
None of us pretend we could ever replace Gergen or Jake. Two of the all-time best anywhere.
When you mention Gergen, Jacobson, don't forget Stan Issacs, Joe Donnelly,Tony Kornheiser. The current Newsday sports columnist are great, but I got hooked in the 70's by reading the best sports section in NY area.
