I have Gary Waslewski's autograph . . . somewhere

gary_waslewski_autograph.jpgGolly, I didn't even know young people of the 21st century have access to big-league ballplayers for autographs before games until I read Tribune Co. teammate T.J. Simers' piece on the Dodgers' controversial new policies in that area.

And his followup on the same subject.

I never was a huge autograph guy, even as a kid.

I remember getting a signed picture of the Giants' Ron Johnson at the opening of a health club.

And in 1970 my mother took me to a school gym somewhere where I got Roy White, Curt Blefary, Ron Klimkowski and Gary Waslewski.

I could be off on one or two of those names. And I'm not sure where the piece of paper is now.

I now will write a column for Friday's newspaper. Enjoy Zenit vs. Leverkusen on Fox Soccer Channel at 12:30.

to be followed by Getafe vs Bayern Munich at 230 and a tape delay o fPSV vs Fiorentina at 500PM. Mike and the Mad Dog will interrupt their discussion of Mantle vs Mays to comment on these games. The UEFA cup is like the NFL Playoff Bowl of the 1960s or the NCAA basketball third place game of days gone by. Or the NIT today. Champions League is where it is at.

I remember going to Concordia College in Bronxville and watching Eastchester High School teachers play Major League all-stars. Rusty Torres, Curt Blefary, Al Santorini,Jeff Torborg, Roy White,Johnny Briggs were the autographs that I got and still have from that Saturday night in January 1974. I thought it was cool that they would all come to my neighborhood to play basketball.
