Greatest Italian ever? DiMaggio? Loren? Benigno?
Hockey fever is sweeping the nation!
NBC's overnight ratings for the second weekend of the playoffs were 1.2 and 1.3 percent of homes in 56 major markets, up from 0.9 and 1.1 last season for comparable slots.
OK, so it's not exactly fever yet. But the network - which is very close to signing a new contract with the NHL, by the way - is salivating over some potential second-around matchups involving Original Six and/or major market and/or Sidney Crosby franchises.
The Rangers being involved helps, obviously.
Speaking of the Blueshirts, during my time monitoring SNY's late afternoon shows for my newspaper column, I watched with horror as "Daily News Live" host Chris Cotter listed the top all-time returns of former New York athletes and did not include Ed Giacomin.
Joe Benigno thankfully chimed in and added him to the list. (That's not Eddie in the picture. Bonus kudos to first reader to identify him.)
Joe had a good line on the show last week. Cotter name Leonardo da Vinci as "the greatest Italian of all time."
Said Benigno: "No, Frank Sinatra."

That's Andy Bathgate.
Greatest Italian ever is Joe Girardi. Why? His triple off Greg Maddux in the 96 WS, thats why.
Close seconds include, Rizzuto, Berra, or any other Italian to play baseball for the NYY
Congrats, Tom. We have a winner! I had no idea Coach Coughlin was a Rangers fan.
Greatest Italian ever?
No brainer....
Any member of the Pappalardi family who ran the Pizza Cove in Midlawn Plaza on Hicksville Rd in N Massapequa (next to Rum Bottoms) in the 60's and 70's.
The pizza was to die for.
It was buttah
Are those the ratings from this weekend the second weekend of the playoffs or last weekend the first weekend of the playoffs?
Side note on The Pizza Cove.
They were the next to last stop on my Newsday route (the deli -two storefronts over was the last stop)....in 67-69 and I could always look forward to a slice and a coke as a tip on Friday, collect day.
Followed up by a Yoo-hoo and a 1/4 lb of mac salad at the deli.
Good thing I delivered newspapers on a bicycle.
Not so good that it didn't keep my gall bladder from retiring about 8 years ago.
Coach Coughlin is also a Yankee fan, and has a soft spot for the Cosmos.
Isles27: Sorry. I made a boo-boo. Meant second weekend.
