'Friday Night Lights' is near the top of a mediocre genre
I wrote a Sunday newspaper column about the recent renewal of "Friday Night Lights" and used that as an excuse to veer off into a discussion of the bleak history of sports-themed TV shows.

Still don't think it was as good as the book (Love Buzz's work) or the movie (Though the camera work was akin to a Paul Greenglass or Tony Scott film).
This show has so much depth. Football is only on the surface. If people would just get over themselves and their preconceptions and give this show a chance they would never stop watching.
The reason the fans are so passionate about this show is the realism and perhaps that is a reason why others turn away. Perhaps society has become too much about escapism and people just don't want to watch people being real, dealing with real life (save the murder storyline) and going through real stuff.
Never by any other television show have I been made to think and feel as long and deeply about life and how I live than by this one.
This is reality television because it is about real life, not the fantasy of 15 minutes you never should have gotten.....
