Are sports bloggers amusing or abusing? Yes.

bissinger_photo.jpgHere are some remarks from Buzz Bissinger (see post below) aimed at Will Leitch that I jotted down longhand last night:

"I really think you're full of ----."

"It really ---- the ---- out of me."

"It's a complete dumbing down of our society."

"This guy, whether we like it or not, is the future."

"The quality of writing in blogs generally is despicable."

40 years ago there were Old School sportswriters such as Jimmy Cannon cursing out the "chipmunk" school of new writers like Leonard Schecter. Some things never change.

Buzz Bissinger gave the Ivy League another black eye over their alleged holier than thou elitism. You're still cool with me, Neil.

The irony in what Buzz said about blogs and what he directly said to Will Leitch to his face is priceless. Will knows it. You know it. My father and mother knew it watching with me. It seems though that Buzz and Costas didn't know it.

Buzz Bissinger forced in an interview to just take pot-shots at Sid Rosenberg, I doubt they are bedfellows, on Jon Sciambi's show in 2007:

For a good writer he has a real potty mouth.

Here's a summary from a poster on Deadspin, RachelRayIsTheDevil:
"Here's Buzz being the biggest hyprocrite on earth. The nice thing about a blog is that if you don't like the tone or the content you can simply leave. It is never forced on you. In this interview, John Sciambi makes him look foolish. Buzz loses his cool and makes a "go work at Denny's d#ucheb#g"equivalent statement about non-present morning host Sid Rosenberg. He did this on PUBLIC AIRWAVES. The interview gets interesting/funny at just past the five minute mark when Sciambi casually dismisses what Buzz is asserting. Buzz failed to do any research on his topic (pitchers coming up too early) and instead quotes the "respected Tony LaRussa" to support his statements. At this point Buzz abandons reason and takes shots at Rosenberg right out of the blue. His behavior was FAR worse than anything I've seen here at DS. What a HYPOCRITICAL @SSHOLE !"

I didn't watch the show, I never even heard of Buzz Bissinger until a few minutes ago but I know who Leitch is and what he is. Some people confuse bloggers with journalists and reporters, the same as some people who listen to Rush Limbaugh, or Mike Francesa or Chris Russo think they are journalists--they are not, they're commentators who commentate on stories they have read elsewhere. They don't normally "break" news because they have no idea how to break news. So is Leitch and if anyone out there thinks the blogosphere is going to someday take the place of real journalism, they better look more close at the blog. The blog is usually a series of links to stories the blogger thinks are interesting to read, with usually snarky comments attached to the linkage by the blogger. That's not journalism, it's entertainment. I doubt Leitch would know how to do an investigative piece, such as the types being done on steroids/Roger Clemens in another NYC tabloid. But he can do research. Not taking anything away from him, it's 2 totally different worlds that are getting confused with each other right now.

That guy looks like Tom Courtenay as Pasha in Dr. Zhivago.

Holier than thou MSM

dying a nice slow death

Give em hell Will

Leitch is not a journalist and he knows that. He's considered himself a fan who is frustrated by mostly the media and vents with snarky humor. What I don't get is the whole frame of the segment was how they were making it as people going after athletes. Please! It's mostly the media. Most of the stuff on Fire Joe Morgan and Awful Announcing has to do with the MSM. If anything I always thought bloggers were taking away from the sports talk radio more than print media. Most of the stuff like The Clones on Jim Rome's Radio Show is perfect for the blogosphere. The MSM, especially in print media, are completely paranoid that a free forum that is mostly opinion is available while their newspapers are being sold, cutting staff, and even seizing to ever exist.
