Tom Seaver once struck out Mickey Mantle

John Philips is at it again. This time it's a 1983 Kiner's Korner in which Ralph discusses with Tom Seaver Mr. Terrific's return to the Mets.

It includes video of Seaver's only career shot at Mickey Mantle, in an All-Star Game. The Mick struck out.

This guy Philips is a gem. He's even got some of the Mets 1977 Old Timer's Day on his You Tube site ... best part is when they open the center field gates and Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, Willie Mays, and Joe DiMaggio walk out!
MC'd by the incomparable Lindsey Nelson in an iridescent blue jacket from Marsh's of Huntington!
I for one hope his videos last before the nasties at MLB tell him to take 'em down!

Thanks for the OTD tip -- I remember being at that game.

Okay, you Met's fans......
Seaver strikes out The Mick on 3 consecutive fastballs?
Let's TRY to keep things in perspective here.....
An All-Star Game?
VERY LATE in Mantle's career?
What are the chances that Mickey was not AT LEAST a little bit hungover when he went to the plate?
Seaver was GOOD.....but very few pitchers EVER got 3 consecutive fastballs by Mickey Mantle....in REAL GAMES... even at the end of his career.
In fact, very few pitchers would DREAM of throwing 3 consecutive fastballs to Mickey Mantle at any point in his career.
My guess is Seaver's catcher got a whiff of The Mick from the on-deck circle.

505, you are missing the point. No one in there right mind would sit there and and say that Mantle was in his prime. But it is the closest you get to two of the all time greats facing each other. Gives you a second to picture the two facing each other in their primes. Remember, when this happened, be it '67 or '68 Seaver was a first or second year pitcher, not as good as he would become. It would have been awesome to see both of them face each other in their primes.

Any video of the double the great Don Wert hit off Seaver in this game? Or the home run Bob Uecker once hit off Sandy Koufax?

Paul,

"505, you are missing the point."

LOL, agreed...
I guess I read too deeply into Neil's comment "The Mick struck out", and put tone and inflection in his words. And read it as a Met VS. Yankee thing.....a dig at the Mick...be that as it may....
And got my Yankee fences up.
I suppose I was way off base...

RIGHT NEIL??

505: Mantle played in the ASG for the same reason Cal Ripken Jr. and his .297 OBP% made the All-Star team in his later career. They were every man's crush and hero. Don't get all defensive about a little factoid that even some baseball history junkies like myself didn't even now. Carl Hubbell striking out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin in a row is an awesome feat in itself and that took place in the ASG that DID NOT count toward anything but it meant something at the time.
