SportsCenter, NCAA highlights are a very tight fit

wky.bmpOn a couple of occasions the past two days, SportsCenter anchors have made cracks about the shortness of some of the NCAA highlights.

It's not their imagination, and it's not yours. And it has nothing to do with ESPN downplaying an event that is not seen live on that channel.

CBS restricts the length of time ESPN can spend showing its highlights.

I had heard the rules governing such things are a tad complex, but that the allowable time for highlights is around three minutes - total - so I checked it out this morning with a stopwatch.

Sure enough, ESPN boiled a 16-game day full of wild finishes and upsets down to 3:30.

Digger Phelps barely can clear his throat in that amount of time.
