WFAN hosts are playing nicely for now

mark.jpgSpeaking of giving subjects short shrift because of newspaper space restrictions (see post below), I struggled to explain to non-blog readers the background of the amusing Ca-Boom vs. Francesa/Russo mini-feud at WFAN, and didn't have room to share more of operations manager Mark Chernoff's thoughts on the subject.

Russo did appear on the air with Ca-Boom Thursday morning, and Craig Carton and Mike Francesa spoke, so perhaps all is well for now.

Chernoff said there were misunderstandings on both sides during the original incident. He said Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason were not aware that Mike Francesa and Chris Russo had acknowledged on the air their strong early ratings. (True.)

He also said Francesa misunderstood the caller who initially explained the Clark Kellogg Affair to him.

"Mike heard the audio [of Boomer and Carton] and said it’s not a big deal what they said," said Chernoff, who said he was reluctant to "make a mountain out of a molehill'' on the subject.

"I’d certainly rather than nobody criticize anybody on the air but we’ve had this before. When there’s a little it’s fine . . . I've lived through them at many radio stations."

could the problem with a majority of the on air talent at wfan be caused by an executive like chernoff who seems to be incompetent? how about his latest find adam the bull. his judgement should be examined at the corproate offices.i think any run of the mill caller(like myself( can do a better job of finding talent. just take hard look who is working there, what a disgrace to be saddled with such garbage.

Is this THE Bruce in Bayside? I am honored to have you as a reader, sir!

Stop the presses .... Carton can speak?!!!! I just thought he shrieked, trilled, yelped, chirped and howled whilst Norman talked all about, well, himself.

But perhaps Chernoff -- the Mensa member who brought us Screech Roberts -- is on to something with the phrase "Mountain out of a Molehill."

Isn't that, after all, what the morning show is? Norman's Ego emerging from the Molehill that is Craig Carton?

neil.my points should be debated at length.i finally have a forum for my opnions.

neil. i would like you to do multi part series on the performance or lack of performance of the wfan hosts. do not hold anything back. your deadline will be sometime in mid april.

Neil,

Would this conversation be going on if Imus was never fired? I think not, the ripples won't stop.

Meanwhile Obama you know this ain't Wright. Obama insisted that Imus be fired and WFAN has not been the same since. Rev Wright is correct on one thing the chickens are coming home.

ray,i like the way you think.

Speaking of Screetch Roberts, I heard him earlier today describe the Stanford-Cornell (sorry, Neil) game as the "Battle of the Nerds". If that is not the all-time pot calling the kettle black . . .

It's true. Chernoff demonstrates nothing but contempt for WFAN audiences!!!!

A daily roster that contains Cartoon, Norman, Screech, Maloser, etc?

It's pathetic.

Chernoff is only interested in serving Manhasset Fats, the Ghost of Steve Rubell, and -- apparently -- Mrs. Roberts.

Neil, you'd do us all a great service if you asked the tough questions.

You're the best!

@Ree

Leave the politics out of sports. Mr. Obama is your next president. have some respect.

Chernoff is a music guy. Before going to FAN he completely ruined K-Rock and WNEW-FM where he got his start as a weekend (not even good enough to be full-time) DJ. What he has done at FAN is make sure his friends who lost jobs, like Richard Neer, Harris Allen and a few others who do occasional updates, have some work. Of course, he has to take care of those who feed him like Imus (who wouldn't have been fired if not for ESPN replaying constantly those remarks almost 3 days after they were said to absolutely no immediate reaction at all) and M+M.
As far as the station, it is awful as is every, single talk radio station in the universe. Talk radio isn't compelling radio and isn't entertaining in the least, but it is extremely low budget and works for advertising.

sandy, you forgot mike mccan from wcbs.

Dear Sandy and b in b,

Thanks for the insight. Very interesting.

my son does not screech. he got to this level of fame on his own merritt and skill.i also think he is being groomed for a big future at wfan. i think the plan is for him to take over for mike and chris when they have had enough.he also may have a future in network t.v.to do more than just sports.i have been told he is a natural for the morning news shows.please, just try appreciate his vast knowledge of sports and his entertaing personality.

No I didn't, he's included in the "a few others" part (mainly because I couldn't remember his name :) ).

mrs.r.,what are you smoking? this is as poite as i can be

I can't wait for ESPN 1050 to finally get a real afternoon host soon. Then I can actually listen to the stream before Kay's show which I can actually handle since I've accepted that he is shill for the Hankees. I think if ESPN radio just had more local shows and not national drones like Mike & Mike and Tirico they could actually compete with the very ripe morning and afternoon time slots.

Knowing Cherny's track record, the Mets could win the WS and he'll let them leave for another station and I actually think that wouldn't be such a bad thing with the way that station's running. I wish the Giants could dump them already. Screw the signal, they suck with their coverage! As much as I like listening to Papa and Carl (I try to not to notice Lynch or Jennings) I'd much rather have Paul Dottino and LaGreca covering the team than Continent, who's head has swelled up to be the planet Jupiter. I find it funny that there are so many Jets fans on The Fan and so many Giants fans on 1050 yet they are the home of the opposite teams.

cmg,you may be the winner today for the best and accurate post.

This is in regards to the Imus talk. My parents made me listen to him growing up. I remember the days when there were a bunch of "quack quacks" and he constantly talked about making "monkey love" to women. Maybe he still does, I have no clue. Anyway, back then at least, he'd say much worse things then "nappy headed hoes."

The guy got fired because he had awful ratings. No one listened to him anymore. Stern survived many controversies because his rating were huge. If Imus had rating WFAN would have stuck behind him. People should stop blaming others (Obama? haha) for Imus' lack of audience.

With the Cartoon and the Buffoon in the AM and Screech and Slouch in the midday, the legacy of misogyny, racism, and general arrogance and stupidity lives on at the FAN.

BTW: I'm quite sure that CBS is delighted to have a local (NOT syndicated) morning program in the United States' biggest market that's subsidized by Kars for Kids, Methadone addiction, and "turn your basement into a sports bar" ads.
