SNY offers 90 minutes of guys yelling about sports

bio_scott.jpgYes, I watched SNY's new 5 to 6:30 p.m. lineup Monday, and I'm not (overly) ashamed to admit it.

Early observations:

"Daily News Live": The show has been reduced from 60 minutes to 30 and given a new-look set. I would advise turning the lights up and moving the table top down. The panelists looked like they were sitting at the little kids' table at a bar mitzvah with romantic mood lighting.

"The WheelHouse": Scott Ferrall managed on three different occasions in one 30-minute show to disparage a New York pro athlete by comparing him to a woman. For this we're supposed to give up "Pardon the Interruption?" Speaking of which, the show includes a rundown of coming topics and declares a winner based on the superior debating points. Why hasn't anyone thought of those gimmicks before? Oh, wait . . .

"Loud Mouths": I kind of liked Schein and Carlin, but by this point I had heard quite enough debate about the talk radio topics du jour, from Georgetown to Andy Pettitte to Isiah. At the end of the show the hosts discussed what they would be watching on TV that night. Why hasn't anyone thought of that gimmick before? Oh, wait . . .

In fairness, it was Day One. And in fairness, I'm off this week. I'll give it all another chance after a week or two, OK, guys? Please don't yell at me.

Any women on this panel? If not, no wonder it was uncivilized.

Minor-league production by Philadelphia/Flushing-based cable network using bottom-of-the-barrel talent rejected from major video outlets.
All have faces for radio and voices for wire services.
And this stuff will lead into evening Mets games?
And you thought a simulcast of Mike + The Mad Dog was hitting new lows.
These guys make M+MD look like an HBO-polished show, or the BBC on sport[s]!

When you have no ratings, you have no advertising. When you have no advertising, you don't have money to produce quality TV. As in the rest of the "creative" world when you see a "success" story--copy it for yourself. In this case, the so-called successes are PTI and Sports Reporters" which feature egomaniacs screaming at each other. If these national programs get 1,000,000 viewers total per all their viewings, they would be fortunate. If these shows on SNY get 50,000 they can probably cover their production costs. Anyone who watches this stuff and isn't be paid to do it, needs to find a life outside the living room. SNY, except for the Mets, probably doesn't have many people watching it. Neither does YES, except for baseball and maybe the Nets, and certainly MSG's family doesn't either. Therefore don't expect any quality programs. Quality costs money.

I actually really liked Wheelhouse and I thought Daily News Live is much better with the shorter half hour format. Scott Ferrell and Brandon Tierney have a nice chemistry and unlike Loud Mouths they both seem to get into legitimate fights with each other. Brian Custer also does a good job of giving Wheelhouse some balance from the little I saw. As far as that Loud Mouths show, it's just bad TV, Schein and Carlin trying to put on a fake arguement with each other is pathetic to watch. By the time you get to the Loud Mouth show the topics have already been beat to death by DNL & Wheelhouse, how many debate shows can you have?
Don't get me wrong I like the idea of SNY having similar shows to ESPN like PTI or Around the Horn, but with a local NY flare to it. The idea just gets played out when you have three shows in a row that generally talk about the samething.Maybe they should try to put Sports Nite in between one of the shows to break it up a bit.

ferrall has the most annoying voice in the history of life. there is no way he should be talking.

PTI is good because Kornheiser and Wilbon are good. They just aren't "shouting" at each other.

But I defy anyone to listen to this Ferrell speak for more than 5 minutes. His voice is horrendous.

i have 3 words for this GARBAGE GARBAGE GARBAGE. who is the program director? oh wait i know, mark chernoff. why don"t they put screetch roberts and adam the bull together than we will have bull and s--t.

my son is looking for more of a national platform. my sons reps think his talent is way above the sny cast. again, he does not screech.

I missed Wheelhouse but I like Loud Mouths inspite of Carlin and his ginormous ego that needs to be deflated as soon as possible. I like Ferrall. Just because he has a smoker's voice doesn't mean his opinions should be thought of less. I just wished on DNL that they would give us real sports writers like when they had guest like Rick Reilly and not stooges like Raissman who's not paid to write about the Knicks but how they are covered.

mrs. r, if I were your son I'd be a bit embarrassed to see my mother brag about him on a blog.

Bruce, Curt Gowdy Jr. runs SNY not Cherny. If that were the case Richard Neer and Rick "We must stop using aluminum bats" Wolff would be on ALL the time.

I must be one of those people who need to get a life because I came home from work yesterday and watched Daily News Live and The Wheelhouse. The lighting on Daily News Live was very soothing after a day at work because I lasted about 5 minutes into the Wheelhouse before falling asleep.

Obviously your life outside the living room made you tired. I can't imagine the soothing soulful rasps of Scott Ferrell's voice would be able to put anyone to sleep. Unless you drank a case of beer before watching.

annie writes are they any women on this panel? the question is did sny even interview any women for the positions or did they just turn on the fan or 1050 and say let's hire them.

scott ferrell is a dope and i have no clue why they would hire him bc he simply does not know his stuff.

They had Julie Donaldson and replaced her with Jocelyn Pierce for Mets Weekly. It slim pickings among women sports reporters/personalities unless you're really rooting for ANOTHER Lori Rubinson sighting on DNL.

Andy Pettitte should wear a dress ! He's soft ! He'll be on the DL at least twice this year without his magic juice and lies ! He's the new Carl Pavano of the Yanks--can't ever pitch--ouch, my back is stiff--ouch my elbow hurts--pass me my needles ! Oh, GOD will forgive me

I forgot your a genious about sports tv Neil !

good luck getting rid of Ferrall too. He's only been on for a year now and they just gave him a new contract. Plus, his SIRIUS radio show is doing great and they just merged with XM, so his audience doubles.

Looking at Carlin on TV is torture--he looks like a pumpkin

DNL set is way better than before but the Daily News writers are ALL boring and have been since day 1

wheres the young no-knowledge evan? shouldnt he be on here somewhere? when and what show will sny put on as a simulcast like mike and chris? will it be michael kay? could be a few conflicts there. how about joe and no-knowledge evan? or boomer and carton?

julie is off in boston i wonder if she went to japan.
as for lori i don't really know her

but there is a brunette on news12 long island who does sports. i think her name is amy. she is funny like steve colbert.

PTI is a quality show one of the few from Bristol.

It's good because of Kornheiser and Wilbon. Not necessairly the format or production values.

Just try to watch an epsisode when one of the duo is away especially if the truly hatable Dan Lebatard is on.

Train wreck television when Dan L sullies the set.

Absolutely horrible. Jay Mariotti level of incompetence.

Only good fill ins have been Bob Ryan& Jason Whitlock.
