This is kind of interesting.
Turns out the NFL opener and the climax of the Republican Convention might be in conflict.
Some of the solutions offered on the link above are ludicrous. But can something be done?
"We are aware of it and will be discussing it with NBC," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello (who grew up in Syosset) wrote in an e-mail.

Here I come, always with a solution!
Just give the opener to either the NFL Network or ESPN and as compensation give NBC the Thanksgiving Night game that usually runs on NFL Network.
There are plenty of other channels to watch the convention on if you care. Keep the game on NBC.
I know it's stupid and too late to ask but why not move the convention up? The candidate is chosen who cares about the whole traditions of the current serving parties being the last to hold conventions.
Actually, a better option is to move the game to Saturday night. Since the Super Bowl Champion Giants (I love saying that) by recent tradition should be the home team this also gets away from the offsite parking problem. The offsite parking is at a corporate park which makes a weeknight game more difficult. Hey I guess that means we don’t have to worry about a Monday night home game either.
hello, nfl network is free.
Put the game on ESPN and give NBC an extra game on a Thursday night in the first half of the season. Or have John McCain speak on Wednesday night instead of Thursday.
McCain's speech will not move, and NBC has to televise it or skip Obama/Hillary's speech. They will move the game, either time or network.
The game can't be moved to Friday or Saturday because the deal from the 60s that gave the NFL an anti-trust exemption dealing with the networks prohibits the NFL from showing games on TV on Fridays and Saturdays during HS and College football season.
This loophole is actually part of the business plan of Mark Cuban's UFL which plans to play on Friday nights.
Although, I should say the league can move the game to Fri or Sat, they just can't televise it. A couple of years ago, the Dolphins home opener was played on Sat in the face of an oncoming hurricane and was broadcast tape delayed on NFL Sunday ticket at its regularly scheduled time Sun 1pm local time.
