ESPN The Magazine is closing in on adolescence!

espncover.jpgMazel tov to ESPN The Magazine on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.

I was invited to lunch in the summer of 1997 to discuss a potential position with the yet-to-be launched publication, but it didn't work out, and here and I still am. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Sure, I'm a good 15 years past ESPN The Mag's prime audience, and I could make fun of the frequency with which scowling young men have appeared on the cover with their arms folded over the past decade.

But it's all good. These days, it's crazy to begrudge any form of print journalism its success.

And it is a success, with a circulation of around 2 million and the kind of demos advertisers find interesting. For example: median age, 31.8; median income, $63,613.

I have gotten it several times as a "compensation when your current magazine goes bankrupt". I have been mostly unimpressed and not subscribed on my own. Obviously there are 2,000,000 people who don't share that opinion.

I agree with Jim, I was once a subscriber to the magazine and found it to be one of if not THE worst sports magazines ever.It is a horrible read with absolutely no flow to its articles and genuinely bad stories I could not wait for the subscription to end and I never picked it up since. I'd much rather read a matchbook cover.

Francesa bashes this magazine every chance he gets. I think Rick Reilly will join the magazine in June, so at least it has that going for it.
