Chris Russo called the basketball a 'pumpkin'

russoc.jpgOK, I'll stop now and focus on my Friday newspaper column.

That is, assuming I can pull myself away from listening to Chris Russo do college hoops play-by-play. One highlight so far: Calling the ball a "pumpkin."

(I liked him better on Mets play-by-play, but that's just me.)

Busy day.

At 1 p.m. I'll check out Billy Crystal's swing.

At 2 p.m. I'll check whether Stephen A. Smith still is on the radio.

Mighty Jugs Francesa and Bald in a Big Spot Russo are truly inspiring in their work this day.

The limits of talent and knowledge evident everywhere.

Maybe Billy Crystal can take over for them for a day or, well, forever....

I don't think Dog learned the rosters until the second TV timeout.

The late Celtics announcer Johnny Most also called it a pumpkin as well.

I don't want to creep you out, Best, but you sound like "Doug" imitating you on his Neil Best blog blog.

Sorry.

I guess this must be how John Madden feels when he hears Frank Caliendo imitate him.

Ok, I have some Giants news to write. Danny Clark just signed.

He also called the nation of Tanzania Tan-zay-nia

Another good one was Francesa often referring to West Virginia as Cincinnati because Bob Huggins was roaming the sidelines.

Hearing the game a good 5 minutes on video stream, I honestly thought it was just Russo there.

Slight correction/addendum to Ken Fang's note - Johnny Most would call Kevin McHale's shots a "pumpkin," or "fall away pumpkin," or "running pumpkin." He never ever called the ball a pumpkin when Bird or Parish had possession - maybe when Ainge had it perhaps......

What was funny in 2006 was when Russo was complaining that Cohen would go into the radio booth replacing McCarthy during the Mets playoff run and that it should be McCarthy's job. Russo says that after he and Francessa took over McCarthy and Rose's job for a game.

I can't believe he's still harping about Crystal. The only thing that has made me mad about this was that the whole story took away from other important sports topics on Sports Center and sports radio. Who cares? It's done. If the Yankees want to act like a small market team, let them.
