Breaking news: Rick Sutcliffe has colon cancer

rick_sutcliffe_sm.jpgESPN announced Thursday that baseball analyst Rick Sutcliffe is suffering from colon cancer and will be sidelined during treatments, including chemotherapy.

Sutcliffe's case is said to be "treatable and curable." He will not travel to Japan for the Red Sox-Athletics series March 25-26. Steve Phillips will replace him.

“I deeply appreciate the support of the ESPN family and my family and friends around the country,” Sutcliffe in a news release.

“Rick is an integral member of our baseball team and we wish him a full recovery,” said Tim Scanlan, ESPN vice president, event production. “We will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Sutcliffe has been with ESPN since 1999.
