Billy Crystal is not the original 'Designated Hebrew'

blomberg.JPGBilly Crystal is scheduled to DH for the Yankees today, which he joked stands for "Designated Hebrew" in his case.

Of course, the original Designated Hebrew was Ron Blomberg, who became MLB's first DH in 1973 and later titled is autobiography . . . yup, you guessed it.

Blomberg probably isn't offended that Crystal stole his line. He is an upbeat, interesting fellow.

My daughter and I met him at an event at the Stadium in September. He said he was on his way home from New York to Atlanta afterward for Yom Kippur.

Not a line you often hear from retired big leaguers.

Thanks Neil - I was waiting for someone to catch this item.

So Billy wears a Mets cap in movies, has a World series ring from 2001 when the D'backs beat the Yanks, lives in California and gets to go to the front of the line like a Make-A-Wish kid dying of cancer. The only thing dying concerning Billy has been his career - I want my money back from "Analyze That" and other bomobs after "When Harry Met Sally".

I was with Ron Blomberg at two events regarding Jews and Baseball and he is a great and outgoing guy...unlike Billy who cursed out reporters in the Yankee clubhouse like he owned the place.
