1969 World Series/Easter fun, Part IV
More from the pre-game stuff before Game 1. Various Nixon family members on hand, disrupting the warmups!
Curt Gowdy calls Bowie Kuhn "an articulate, dynamic man who has proven to be a great leader for baseball." Wow.

Actually Bowie Kuhn did get a lot of praise in 1969, his first year. Anyone with a pulse would have after Spike Eckert. That faded away fast his second year.
I can't wait to see what is said at Bowie Kuhn's Hall of Fame induction ceremony. It will be like Ling becoming a TV judge on "Ally McBeal"..Richard Fish came to her court with a bowl of popcorn.
Cuellar "turns aside and heads back to the dugout".
There's a brief scene of Earl Weaver scurrying around behind the congregation....Too bad he wasn't miked..
"God #@$%&, get these MOTHER %$#@$%$#% OUTTA HERE, MY PITCHER'S GOTTA WARM UP!!!!
Nowadays, with so many dignitaries hovering around, Cuellar would have been checked for a green card.
That scene on the field was incredible. Bowie Kuhn was an incredible boob for many reasons, but the fact he allowed (and participated) in such a scene should have bee grounds for his immediate dismissal. But, his sponsors, the O'Malley's wouldn't have like that.
I assume this Kuhn praise was before his squabbles with Miller, the Curt Flood controversy, not showing up for Hank Aaron breaking the record, among other things.
Indeed. John Phillips in another post mentions Dick Schaap's book "The year the Mets lost last place" which deals primarily with three series: two with the Cubs and one with the Expos mid summer. At one game Bowie Kuhn shows up to talk to Leo Durocher and Schaap describes him by saying everyone thinks he's doing a great job.
