Jim Himes receives endorsement from powerful lobby

shays.jpgSports Illustrated is so busy raking in its annual dough from the swimsuit issue that it might not have time to come up with a "Sign of the Apocalypse" for next week's issue.

So here is a free suggestion from WatchDog.

It's a welcome to "Mike and the Mad Dog" listeners on the Web site of Jim Himes, a candidate for Congress from the district currently represented by Christopher Shays, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Mike Francesa and Chris Russo have targeted Shays for removal based on his performance today in questioning Brian McNamee, and began openly campaigning for Himes on the air. (Mr. Russo lives in Shays' district.)

WatchDog is apolitical and thus will not be taking an official position on any Connecticut Congressional races, but I will say this:

I was around Rep. Shays both inside and outside the hearing room during the NFL portion of the 2005 steroid probe and have watched him during the current "investigation" by Congress and have the following advice for him and his staff:

In the future, keep this guy as far away from talking sports as possible. He does not speak the language, and ends up embarrassing himself in front of whatever sports-fan constituents he has.

Chris Shays is also my Congressman, and my wife has known him personally from before he was a Congressman. He might not know a lot about sports, but when it comes to things that Congress should be spending their time on, like taxes, Social Security and the budget he's top notch.

The Sports Pope and The Mangy One as political kingmakers?
Absurd. Though listening to them after watching and listening to a segment of America's 435 Best and ahem Brightest was truly entertaining ... over on the other NY sports talk channel was Stephen A. Smiff ... unlistenable.

Mr. Best,
Out of all the absurdity and farcical comedy going on in our nation's capital right now, I have found a small beacon of sanity in this latest human challenge to the hypothesis of Darwin's Theory.

Your editors had the good sense to assign Baumbach to cover this Molierian farce evolving in Washington.
How prescient of them to have L'idiot covering the idiocy.

At least in "my book". (mon livre?)

Chris Shays is a disgrace and should be stepped on.

Chris Shays has embarassed himself with his lack of insight in sports, and his rants against witnesses in many other fields. He has totally failed in his responsibilities for oversight in areas as diverse as Blackwater and Katrina.

I, too, am a constituent of his. His postions on taxes, Social Security and the budget, which Rob likes so much, have always favored the rich at the expense of the middle class and working men and women.

Shays represents my home district and yesterday, like many other days with Mr. Shays, was embarrassing. He has no business near baseball, football, or anything else connected to sports. I wish he more properly placed his passion for things that mattered in America - the war in Iraq, the economy, getting more Americans health care.

The sad fact is that Shays came across as someone who was more interested in getting an autograph from Clemens than actually finding out what was happening in baseball.

It's simple, Shays needs to go. He embarrassed my district as well as the state and as a Republican, I'll NEVER vote for him again.

I'm a disgrace!
