David Tyree's catch Sunday was quite impressive

tyreeone190-cp.jpgThanks to our friends at Awful Announcing for this find.

It's Steve Sabol of NFL Films, who has been to all 42 Super Bowls, declaring David Tyree's fourth-quarter catch to be the best play in the history of the Super Bowl.

It's the best football play I have ever seen - I have no idea how he made the catch. Combine that with Eli's ability to get out of trouble and you have yourself a tremendous play.

Add all of that with the timing of the play and it's simply remarkable.

Neil - you covered the Giants for awhile, can you recall any play as good as that, even if it wasn't in as big a situation?

When I saw the NFL Film on Inside the NFL and they called it The Greatest Play in Super Bowl history, I immediately thought if it was better than Montana to Taylor or better than Swann's catches. If it isn't, then it sure is right up there.

If Steve Sabol says it's the best play ever, who am I to argue? Dude has probably seen every NFL play and anything good in slow mo from several angles.

I love the fact it was caught by Tyree. He has a great name too.

The catch and Tyree remind me of this work by ee cummings (sorry, the blog removes the spacing, but ee wouldn't mind):

The thing that sets this play apart from the others that Sabol spoke of -- and those were all eternally memorable -- is that it had two spectacular elements -- Manning and then Tyree. All the other plays, as great as they were, had one defining element.

As to the first commenter asking about a big play in Giants history not necessarily on such a huge stage ... how about Simms-to-Johnson on fourth-and17 against the Vikings? After that, the Giants ran the table all the way to Pasadena.

I still go with Golden Richards but Tyree's was clutch

Peter: No.

Simply the greatest catch I've ever seen in almost 50 years watching...A Titan-Jet fan
