TD or not TD? That was the question, CBS
I'd have mentioned this in my Tuesday newspaper column if it weren't for the fact it is kind of full of Giants stuff, but . . .
I thought Dan Dierdorf could have done a better job on CBS Sunday of analyzing the pros and cons of Tony Dungy's decision to go for a touchdown rather than a field goal trailing by four points with two minutes and three timeouts left.
Greg Gumbel tried to prompt him, but not much came of it.
Dierdorf and Gumbel also failed fully to capture the profound, dramatic nuttiness of Billy Volek leading the Chargers to a victory over the Super Bowl champs.
Oh, well. On to Green Bay.

I don't think it's much of a question. If you are from the Herm Edwards school of thought, maybe you go for the FG. But the right call is go for a touchdown. The only reason to go for a FG is if you are down 1-3 or 8-11 points.
I am even suprised it became an issue.

I think you might be looking to stir the pot here. When you are only seven yards away from taking the lead with two minutes left, I can't see any scenario where you kick a field goal that doesn't even tie the game.
Dierdorf brings NOTHING to the table.
He says very obvious things in classic "I'm an ex-player" tone so it sounds smart, but I have never learned anything about football listening to him.
He was as bad as Madden is now back when Madden was good.
Karl/Anonymous: I disagree that it was a no-brainer. Boomer was strongly in favor of the field goal option. I think it's very much worthy of debate.
Dierdorf would have been perfectly within his rights to argue in favor of going for it, but there should have been a discussion about the pros and cons, which Gumbel attempted to start.
Whatever. It's all Giants, all the time now, friends.
Good point Neil - The Colts would have been down by one with three time outs...the counter argument should have been that the Indy D hadn't stopped them all day, but alas, ol Dan couldn't muster the ANALYTICAL skills to make the argument. He's an ANALYST - he should ANALYZE. There was better analysis at the bar Saturday night as we watched the Pats/Jags over several cold beers.
Dan just wanted to be old school and scold Phillip Rivers for yelling at the crowd.
ps - Neil, the "Preview" button doesn't seem to work on the blogs.
whenever I hit it I get a "submission error" and I'm told I've made too many posts in too little time.
good thing that doesn't happen to you... ;)
Neil, I appreciate being able to discuss differing opinions without name calling and eye gouging.
Dierdorf is by far the worst of any network's commentators. He's usually good for saying several stupid things each game. Unfortunately, he was CBS's choice for most Chargers games. I prefer Randy Cross if I'm going to get an old lineman.
Sure, a good commentator would have spelled out the pros and cons of the 3 v. TD approaches, but I think Dungy made the right call. That they shut Manning down was a low grade miracle.
Hearty congrats on your team's glorious victory, CC. Looking forward to Eli vs. Bolts in the Really Big Game.
JoeNunz: Sometimes I get that same notice when I post comments. Are you making sure to include the security code?
Neil -
yep, I used the security code. I know nothing about web programming but I'm guessing it's looking for the security code AGAIN after you hit "preview". I guess I'll just proof my entries before I hit post...
And is Eli/Bolts a prediction? Should I wager hard earned money on that? Or should I just look for Gridiron Guide's blog...
I was 1-for-3 against the spread over the weekend, winning only on the Giants game, and am next to last in Glauber's contest. So I would NOT recommend taking my word for anything.
I guess my picks this week are . . . Oh, what the heck, I'll take the Jints and Bolts vs. the spread.
You got that, Glauber?
Neil
I posted the "anonymous" post and I tried to post a follow up but your security code system is killing me.
Any chance your tech department can log our IP addresses and identify us as "friendly"?
Peter: I feel your pain. I will look into it. Thanks. Neil
Got it, Best.
