Radio Row has a strong New York flavor this year

rock.jpgHere is my Friday newspaper column.

It's about the famed Radio Row at the Super Bowl, which this year has a heavy local flavor, for obvious reasons.

I briefly quoted Michael Kay of ESPN 1050 talking about his chat with Mike Francesa of WFAN before Francesa went on the air Wednesday.

Click below for more on that from Kay.

On the competition for guests: "We want the same people. We had Mike McCarthy before them. We had Phil Simms and they didn't have him. They had people we didn't have. What I'm trying to do is get the best guests for the way I want to do the show, and if they had them before I'll just try to do a better interview."

On ESPN 1050 being at the Super Bowl: "I've always said we have to be here. I've always wanted to be here. I do not think we would have been here if the Giants were not. But I think in the future we will be here all the time. If you're a talk show in New York and your competitor is here you should be here as well."

On verbal shots he took at Francesa and Russo in the past: "When I first started this I did it, and I will never do it again. I have the utmost respect for what they've done. They are the gold standard in this industry and I think there is room in the city for both to succeed and do well. I don't hold animosity toward Mike and Chris at all. I really don't dislike them. I have a lot of respect for them. I wish I had their success."

On what he said to Francesa: "I just said, 'You know, we've both done OK for ourselves.' And that's the truth. I'm the Yankees announcer. That's what I wanted to be when I was 9 years old. I'm very happy with how things have gone. I'm competitive and I want to win, but I have no animosity or hatred or any ill will toward anyone. I'm just not like that. Those guys are good guys."

Neil, 1050 ESPN has been to the Super Bowl before locally. In 2002 Don LaGreca was in New Orleans, in 2003 I was there Wally and the Keeg in San Diego and in 2004 Wally and the Keeg were in Houston. True its Kay's first time but up until a few years ago he was on mornings and the station didn't want to send him.

Kay wishing M&MD success? This from the guy who in 2003 spent 20 minutes on how they wouldn't mention his name reading commercials for YES postseason shows as the contracts stipulated?? Maybe he has gained some perspective that he is very lucky to have his dream job. Now if he will only wait when a ball is hit before saying "There's a deep flyball....to the shortstop."
Hopefully there are TVs out there turned on to Versus and their collection of fishing shows today.
Reminds me..I saw a Sunday newspaper from Virginia two days ago. On the front page, in the upper left of the paper next to the name it said "500 hours to speed week at Daytona". How come Newsday can't do that?

Can you get Fran or Dog to discuss whether or not they'll discuss Superbowl with Imus from radio row?

Oh god...Wally and the Keeg! Way to bring back bad memories. I'll never forget the day Wally Matthews said he thought all sports fans were leeches and was only "doing this for the paycheck." Sounds like a great guy. Wonder whatever happened to him???

Oh wait...

Wally is also a sports fan so what a dumbass for saying that. Everyone is a fan except for the players. Its good that mike and kay are speaking. why be so bitter since they both are rich?

players can be fans too but writers and talk shows hosts act like they are players and above the fans.

boy, kay on with Imus this morning.

doug,

What happened there? I'm sure there were some awkward moments. If Kay made that tirade that compared jinxing a no-hitter to the Holocaust in the after the Imus incident methinks he would not be on radio row right now much less the YES-man. Did he mentin how much he loves Sean Hannity?
