Newsday meets the new boss, nothing like the old boss
I was in Melville Tuesday to meet Tribune's new CEO, Sam Zell, who toured the newsroom shaking hands, then addressed the troops and took questions for about 90 minutes.
(The picture at left was not taken at Tuesday's event. He talked about money but didn't show us any.)
What did I think? I think Mr. Zell - who introduced himself to everyone simply as "Sam" - is a fascinating character who promised to take risks and creatively improve the company.
Let's hope so, for the sake of the employees of Newsday and of all Long Islanders.
One thing I know for sure: Our CEO dresses and curses more casually than yours does.

Zell is a genius. If he takes an active interest in running the business during this challenging media era it will be to everyone's benefit.

Not all that uncommon for a billionaire with no boss.
He certainly fought hard enough to buy this company, so he certainly seems like he would have an interest in making it better. I remember when Tribune papers were considered the elite (besides the NY Times of course) group of papers in the country, and the ones I look at online now seem to have gone downhill the past few years. But they fell from a high place.
At least you didn't get the shaft like Dow Jones employees did and have to work for Rupert Murdoch.
He looks like Lou Grant
