ESPN 1050 adds an NJ partner just down the dial
ESPN 1050 announced Thursday an agreement to have its programming simulcast starting in mid-January on 1040 AM, a station based in Flemington, N.J.
This will greatly improve the ability of people in central New Jersey to hear the Knicks, Rangers and Max Kellerman.
What about . . . Long Island? I asked that question, but all a station spokesman would say was this: "We're always looking for strategic ways in which we can broaden our reach.''
WLNG in Sag Harbor has been simulcasting Rangers and Knicks games this season, but that leaves large parts of western Suffolk with interference-filled signals after sunset.
The station has quietly been seeking another partner somewhere in central Long Island to either simulcast Knicks and Rangers games or all of the station's programming.
We'll see. But for now Knicks fans in that area have the best deal of any who like to listen to games on the radio. They can't hear what's going on at the Garden.

There's a lot of buzz that 107.1 WLIR Hampton Bays will soon be flipping to ESPN Radio. No word if it will be a simulcast of WEPN or the national ESPN feed. It covers much of Central and Eastern Suffolk county with a transmitter right outside Riverhead.
WLIR just dropped its Alternative Rock format and is currently simulcasting sister Party 105.3.
The 1040 signal is not bad. I heard it from Bethlehem,PA all the way down to the Watchung area on 78 East and it came in pretty strong. Good move.
Thanks for the tip, Lance! WatchDog has the most informed readers in sports media!
My guess is WEPN prefers a simulcast partner for the Knicks and Rangers, even though they probably don't get high ratings, because the talk shows are streamed online and WABC carries every Jets game.
NEW YORK -- January 16, 2008: Earlier this month WEPN (1050 ESPN Radio)/New York reached an LMA with Nassau Broadcasting Partners' WCHR-FM/Flemington, NJ, and now it's announced another agreement to extend its reach, by way of an LMA with Morey Organization's WLIR-FM/Hamptons Bay, NY, on Long Island.
Under the agreement, WLIR, at 107.1 FM, will carry 1050 ESPN's entire 24/7 lineup, beginning on January 21, giving the Sports outlet coverage of Suffolk County and a large part of coastal Connecticut.
"This agreement allows 1050 ESPN to follow our strong fall ratings book with continued growth by providing our extensive Sports programming to an even wider audience," said WEPN President/GM Tim McCarthy. "This is part of our ongoing commitment to our listeners and advertisers and a creative way to engage sports fans on Long Island and coastal Connecticut." >>
Talk radio has no business being on FM, and ESPN just had some radical thing going where a talking head made some remark about Jesus that upset some. Does that mean they now boradcast "clean" dirt on 107.1?
