WFAN feels strongly both ways about the Vikings game

question-mark.jpgAt 1:20 p.m., John Minko reported on WFAN that a Vikings loss tonight would put the Giants into the playoffs.

At 1:30 p.m., Mike Francesa and Chris Russo said (correctly, as far as I know) that a Vikings loss would not put the Giants into the playoffs, and complained (correctly, as far as I know) about people on the station (apparently Chris Carlin) getting that information wrong.

At 1:40 p.m., John Minko reported that a Vikings loss tonight would put the Giants into the playoffs.

At 1:55 p.m., Francesa reported again that a Vikings loss would not put the Giants in, and he and Russo criticized Carlin again for getting it wrong.

At 2 p.m., Minko did NOT report a Vikings loss would put the Giants in.

I have a headache. I'm going to write my newspaper column now.

WFAN is paying the price for hiring clowns, err, entertainers. I think the late night crew is superior to the bunch we are forced to listen to during daylight hours. Francesa and Russo shoot from the hip and rarely get it right. They are both "experts" in the worse sense of the word. I can only take them in very small doses and only when they are talking about baseball even though they might be at their worse when discussing that sport. Help!

Great job by FOX or CBS yesterday, can't remember the culprit, actually missing the final play of the dolphins/ravens because they were in commercial. Holy Crap! Some bonus coverage!! Now, what was the bonus?

Someone smack that producer in the head!

Press the button, dammit! Press the button!!!

Actually, CBS had to cut away from live coverage at 4:15 because FOX had the doubleheader last week, excluding Sunday Ticket viewers, of course.

They can show the end of an ongoing drive (Matt Stover's missed FG) but then each subsequent play has to be shown after it happens, assuming it is highlight-worthy. Once the game ends, CBS could and did go back to the game site for replays and reaction.

If CBS had the doubleheader, they would stay with the game to its conclusion unless it was a blow-out, EXCEPT for local markets of the 4:15 games, which must be taken to their games at kick-off.

Neil, They aren't really going to keep the 12/30 Jets-Chiefs game at 8pm, are they?

M&TheMD need a stat boy like PTI.

It's time to hire a guy who can go on mike, and call these guys out on there mistakes, and actually do some much needed stat work on this show, these guys are just too famous, lazy and shoot from the him all day long.

The station could afford another cheapo on air stat guy, and he would keep these guys on the toes, at the same time, they can keep sliding on research becuase stat guy does it.

Jon: No, they are not.

SC-NJ: Dan is correct.

In order for the Giants to clinch this weekend without winning, both the Vikings and Saints had to lose or tie. With the Saints winning yesterday that makes the Vikings result moot. It certainly helps the Giants if the Vikings lose tonight, but it won't get them anything.

If the Giants and Skins end up 9-7, the Giants will lose out to the Skins.

Multi-team tie-breaks for the Wild Cards are first settled by allowing only one team per division to advance to the tie-break.

To break the tie in the NFC East,

--teams split two games
--both teams would end 3-3 in division
--common opponents is next: Giants would be 7-7 and Skins would be 8-6 (inc uncommon games, the Giants beat Atlanta and San Francisco, while Skins beat Arizona and lost to Tampa).

Skins would then represent the NFC East in the first tie break. If someone else finishes tied with Giants and Skins and Skins don't advance in first tie-break, then Giants would be out because the Skins will always qualify ahead of the Giants if the teams both finish 9-7.

http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures

Of the 4 possible 9-7 teams, New Orleans holds the upper hand --they are the only team that can get to 8-4 in the conference (Wash/Giant/Minn would all be 7-5).

Since NO did not play Min, Wsh or NYG, there's no head-to-head tie-break to worry about. If NO wins their last two (9-7, 8-4 in NFC), I believe that they are in, regardless.

If NO is in, Giants are out if they finish 9-7 and EITHER Wsh or Min does so as well. (Wash would elim Giants in a division tie while Minn beat the Giants head-2-head).

In three way with WSH & MIN, Wash advances first (Elims Giants by division and elims Min by head-2-head), Minnesota gets last spot over Giants (head to head)

In three way with WSH & NO, NO gets 5th on Conf record, WSH gets sixth over Giants on division tie-break

In three way with MIN & NO, NO gets 5th on conf record, MIN gets 6th on head-2-head.

I believe that if the Giants finish in three or 4-way tie at 9-7, they miss the playoffs in every combination.

Bottom line: Giants can clinch 7th place tonight if Vikes lose...but not sixth (which would be a playoff spot).

Oops.. I oversimplifed it --because to get the Redskins to 9-7, they have to beat the Vikings. The part about the Giants and Redskins is correct -- the Redskins will hold the tiebreak over the Giants if they both finish 9-7. The other pieces are more complicated.

To make it really simple from the Giants stand point they need to win one more game. If they fail to win another game they don't deserve to make the playoffs.

But it is inconceivable that anybody could get that wrong especially if it involved a local team...I didn't need a long involved study to see that once New Orleans won on Sunday, a loss by the Vikings could not clinch for the Giants..

If the Giants lose in Buffalo and Washington beats Minnesota next week with a New Orleans win, the Giants playoff chances will be very bleak indeed (they will need 2 out of 3 among New Orleans, Washington, Minnesota to lose on the last Sunday if they lose, as is almost certain, to the Pats)...they better win Sunday.

the fan is totally unlistenable!! !from lectures on sports by a 23 year old nitwit to the torture of chris(shicty schicks shicty shicks)carlin to the whole lori rubison nightmare who can listen to this ??? not to mention tho moose !!!
