WatchDog offers unsolicited advice to Francesa, Russo

carlin.jpgMike Francesa and Chris Russo continue to generate substantial revenue for WFAN and are in no danger of running out of people over 45 to listen to their show any time soon.

Plus, the novelty of having those guys mad at me has worn off, so I'm not looking to pick a fight during this festive, goodwill-toward-sports-talk-hosts time of year.

But . . . after listening to Chris Carlin and Kim Jones bring a younger, fresher, more energetic take to afternoon drive time Thursday - a chemistry they developed over the summer as well as mornings from 5 to 6 a.m. (not that I've been listening to the latter) - this became clearer to me than ever:

Mike and Chris need to do something to keep the show healthy and themselves wealthy for another decade or more.

I'm not sure what, exactly, whether it be more programming gimmicks or expanded kibbitzing with update people or a supporting cast member or two willing to disagree with them. Maybe Craig Carton could call in and get into arguments with them every hour.

There aren't many shows of any kind in any medium that can go 20 years without stirring things up now and then. The boys should consider it in 2008.

Neil,

Imus mentioned you the first half hour of today's show, and your article about Warner Wolf, for Newsday. I don't know does WFAN mention you by name and your writing SMILE

Usually only when Mike and Chris are mad at me.

Carlin + Kim are terrific. The Cartoon is a joke.

Neil, I couldn't agree with you more. They have become Unlistenable. It's a shame they were THE top sports talk show but the routine has become stale and old and Francesas' constant talking down to callers is totally unprofessional and quite frankly despicable. C & K are a very good listen.

Mike and Dog just go through the motions. Anyone remember '96? When the Yanks were making their run, Mike had his Cadillac in the left lane and Dog was going nuts? That was funny. Every year when the "Marquis" used to come out for Super Bowl trivia, lots of people listened just for a laugh.

Now, Mike and Dog have changed. They're getting even bigger bucks now, and they know the station leans on them a little too much. When listening to them at times, their attitude comes across like "I was there with Marconi when he invented radio, we are the first ever sports talk show hosts and your opinion means nothing. What else you got..." They take themselves way too seriously. There's nothing wrong with taking your work seriously but these guys aren't cancer researchers or working for the bomb squad. If a fan calls up with an idiotic trade scenario, don't berate the guy and question his intelligence. Just say, "that's nuts" and hit the button.

And, would it kill those two to talk about hockey once in a while?

P.S. Carlin and Jones are great. I listen to them now in the AM (from about 5:40AM) and then move into Carton and Boomer until I jump on the train. Carton came as advertised. I love it when Carton says something and you can feel Boomer cringe ;-) Carton's comment about Boomer walking down the streets of Minneapolis like a conquering hero, blonde and 6'4"...that was funny.

Its almost offensive that they haven't found a full time slot for Carlin Jones that is more than an hour. They're better than Joe B and Evan. Give them the overnight or the midday. Seems like a nobrainer. Neil, what am I missing? Honestly, she is the best female voice ever on WFAN and one of the best voices overall. She has that certain something you need to be GREAT on the radio.

Kim + Carlin are MUCH BETTER than Screech and Fester.

Obviously these 2 don't care anymore. It's a shame WFAN can't afford to move them back to 3-6:30 and give some time to the other people on the station that DO care about what they do for a living. Nobody on radio should be doing 5 1/2 hours a day plus more hours on the weekend. They don't have enough opinions or news to fill in all that time and if anyone is truly that much of a loser to listen/watch all 5 1/2 hours a day they already know how much repetition is done.

The public has spoken more Carlin and Jones and less Mike and Dog.

As you said Neil, Carlin-Jones are young and more hip (well are there to more un-hip guys than Mike and Dog?) and the fact that Mike and Dog agree on everything nowadays makes for awful radio.

Carton is not as bad as I thought he would be in fact he makes Boomer more tolerable and the fact that the he took the Tuna to task whith Mike in charge of the station gives him extra credit in my book

evan roberts is the best personality on wfan

go evan go evan go go go evan

Neil (You're the Best!)

Not only do Bernie and Lou read the board, but obviously Evan (AKA "Matt" or "Screech") also reads as well.

I've been Evan-free for months now. Living without his sophomoric, misogynistic, misguided, uninteresting screeching has made my world a better place.

My dog, too, seems much happier in to be living in a lower frequency between hours of 10 -- 1pm.

First, on-air people need good radio voices. Carlin, Kim, and Evan are completely unlistenable in that category. Very few can speak on the radio in a natural tone of voice without stumbling on themselves. It takes personality, knowledge and a bunch of other things. It does not necessarily follow that a younger person will be better than an older one. It's not a higher energy level I hear with such people, it's a higher tone of voice and a babble of more meaningless words in an effort to fill up time and sound like they have a personality.

Neil, you have to be kidding. Kim knows nothing about football. She thinks Eli should make a statement saying "Blame everything that goes wrong on me."

The team is 9-5 and people treat Eli like he's a total bust. They blame him for Toomer's drop.
Listening to tubbo and airhead blonde is a punishment no one deserves.

If you think Kim knows nothing about football then I guess you don't know her background.

And you make your argument so convincingly by needing to call them tubbo and airhead blonde.

Neil - Help!

I need a date with Kimberly Jones. Her voice (and personality) is driving me crazy (in a good way, a very good way) now that I hear so much of her. How do you help? You need to write about her everyday (and post pictures of her) until she agrees to go out with me.

Thanks

I don't know or care about a radio host's background. Anyone who thinks Eli should make an announcement to have everything blamed on him is clueless.
Eli is already blamed for everything that goes wrong, and the team has won every close game they've been in.
They have one guy voted to the pro bowl and their best player retired after last year, and they're 9-5.
All I hear is whining and looking at the qb ratings to see where Eli ranks.

I think we are spoiled by living in New York and having WFAN. I mean, have you listened to sports talk radio elsewhere? It is freakin' awful. Just insufferably bad. Mike and Mad Dog are doing just fine in my book. I grew up listening to them and prefer their show over any other. That said, I also like Mike & Mike in the Morning, also...they are at least pleasant to listen to.

I have enjoyed hearing Chris and Kim the past two days, and find their inter-play very enjoyable and unforced. They seem to genuinely get along, and that shows in their discussions - especially when they don't agree.

Now, if we cold get a full-time gig for them in daylight hours - say, 10-1 on 1050?

Just hoping...

Yes give Chris Carlin a longer gig! I don't want him as Giants beat reporter anymore! All of his Giants reports on Mike & Chris always turn into Rutgers football conversations. WFAN should steal Paul Dottino from 1050 to do the Giants beat. I also don't want Evan Roberts on anymore. I personally don't care about The Women of the WWE. So there, I hit two birds with one stone!

Carlin, Kim and Evan would be acceptable on a college or internet radio station at most. I don't mean to minimize their dedication or the fact that they're simply not Mike and Chris-which seems to be enough for a few people. You're not talking about a college radio station here. It's a huge signal, there's nothing even close to what Mike and Chris do anywhere I know of and I've listened around the country.None of these people has the knowledge of numerous subjects that Mike and Chris, especially where baseball is concerned. These 3 talk AT you, Mike and Chris are more conversational.

Uhh...Susan,

Was your post some sort of joke? Did you really talk about the knowledge of numerous subjects that Mike and Chris have?

They used to be pretty good with baseball about 10 years ago, and had decent NFL knowledge. Now all they know is baseball, and not even particularly well at that. Their NFL, NBA, and NHL knowledge is ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC for a sports talk show host. Go to any sports forum and 90% of the posters will know more than these arrogant clowns do.
