WABC treats identity of Imus sports dude as state secret

imusvaughn.jpgThe secrecy with which WABC is guarding the identity of Don Imus' new sports updater is quite extraordinary.

It is especially odd since from what I have been able to dredge up on this, the man in question is not a big name who most listeners will recognize.

He is a young, black comedian with little or no apparent background in sports reporting.

I have confirmed his first name with three sources but I have not gotten a final confirmation of his last name (yet), so why even go there? I have football games to watch!

Well, there you have it, Imus/WatchDog fans. I guess we'll all hear what happens when the new show debuts Monday morning.

Out of curiosity of course I'll listen the first day, but after that duty calls and it's my job to monitor the goings-on at 660 and 1050 on the dial.

Enjoy the show, if you are so inclined.

"That's it for me this week."

Remember this statement, Neil? Just like many of us fellow bloggers, you can't stay away. Far be it for me to get on your case as I do it on the weekends as well, but I notice that when you say you're not going to post, you end up posting. We, the readers of your blog, are the beneficiaries.

As Fruit Loop himself would say, "This is a disgrace!"

I was hoping the racial storyline died with Imus' firing. I was looking forward to Warner Wolf and his classic, "If you had the Knicks and 8.5, you loooost.

And now this ridiculous affirmative action-esque hiring of a black sports updater?

A mystery sports announcer?? Ridiculous. Why has Imus not retired - he's certainly past his prime.

I'll be staying with Boomer.

Come Monday, the only mystery will be WFA....what??!

I think its stupid to hire a black announcer. Who cares if there is a black announcer on Imus? How many black people listen to Imus anyway? This world is so full of bs. If you are racist so what? There is no need to change now. Im black and think Imus is an idiot and funny and old. Those girls were nappy headed. When they showed an old Imus from clip from the 70s when he was in radio, he had a black person with him. Black people worry about so many unnecessary things. And white people act like if they add a token black person that it will change things like they are covering up a guilty conscience. Its garbage.

Illest,

I'm feeling you. And, for the most part, I agree with you. I mean, Imus' comments were offensive to the extreme. But have you listened to WFAN lately? The Skipper and Gilligan -- their PRIME show -- regularly expound on topics and individuals in the most insensitive way imaginable.

Their defenders say "they're just sheltered." I don't buy it.

The interesting thing about Imus, IMO, is that he's this anomaly: cowboy hat wearing, CPW dwelling, irascible, unwatchable, etc, guy who somehow got the story out.

I HATED the sophomoric jokes on the show, but the guy did get pols and others to say things they wouldn't say anywhere else.

And how is it watching Morning Jo(k)e on MSNBC?

It's not that I like Imus as much as I hate everything else.

I'm not even sure that he should be back on air, but IMO what Francessa and Russo and Carton and a few others say on a daily basis, they should be censured.

And we all deserve greater diversity in our radio choices.

Hey Neil - when you say "not a big name that most Imus listeners will recognize"...do you mean a guy who has had zero exposure? I ask because I've seen my share of "Premium Blend" on Comedy Central. The guy may not be known to mainstream America, but he might be known to people who tivo stand-up shows.

oh my goodness, let's throw a couple of names around. could it be chuck nice? who was the chick's side kick? he's a comedian. he has radio experience. hmmmm.

Angie: I'm confident most of my readers are not familiar with him, but I'm sure he has his fans. Whatever. Have to watch football today.

And that guy seen with Imus in the '70's was an engineer he called "Flash" because his last name was a variant of Gordon.
"Flash" went on to be a successful news tv cameraman for WNBC and is now retired in Florida.

Neil,

I predict somebody will be watching and listening tomorrow let the syndication spread.

Neil,

Are you a boomer? I am a boomer, I notice Marty's tags one is Newsday.

And yet, nearly 6 months later NOBODY has ever brought up the role ESPN played in getting Imus fired, by replaying and replaying that TWO DAY OLD clip all day on a quiet spring Friday afternoon until they got the reactions from buffoons like Jackson and Sharpton they wanted to get. When he said it on a Wednesday, I was watching for some reason. Nobody made a big deal of it. Imus was known for crap like that. ESPN couldn't possibly have had an agenda in doing this could they? Like getting Imus fired from his NY radio station in an attempt to draw new listeners to their morning show on ESPN1050 which had low ratings. Maybe it's time we started to find out?
Now I dont care much for Imus anymore, but I know when someone gets railroaded, and he sure was. And he wont be on down here in orlando apparently, so I won't be listening or watching tomorrow at all.

I'll take a wild guess and say it will Bill Daughtery of MSG/ESPN radio. I mean it fits the whole synergetic MSG/Fuse and ESPN/ABC thing that'll be going on.

Gary Coleman? Never mind - he's about 40 so he doesn't count as young.

Sandy

There were all kinds of people, with their knives out and don't bet for a minute, they have put them away. In the words of Whitney Houston: It's ain't right but it's okay.

You can listen to 77WABC streaming online, from your computer.6:00 A.M. eastern. I don't know if they will be offering pod cast.
