Tampa's Andy Freed in mix for Mets radio gig

andy_freed_96x72.jpgWFAN does not appear to be in a huge hurry to name a replacement for Tom McCarthy in the Mets radio booth. No worries. Opening Day is a long way away.

There are several candidates in the mix, but if I were in Vegas putting down a bet I'd probably go with Andy Freed, the voice of the Tampa (no longer Devil) Rays.

I was just kidding about the betting thing. But BoDog did send me some actual betting lines for the NFL Network vs. Big Cable dispute:

Will the NFL move the final Patriots game off of the NFL Network?
Yes +350
No -600

Will Cablevision add the NFL network to basic cable before week 17?
Yes +300
No -500

Will Time Warner add the NFL network to basic cable before week 17?
Yes +350
No -600

Will Charter add the NFL network to basic cable before week 17?
Yes +300
No -500

Will Comcast move the NFL network to basic cable before week 17?
Yes +350
No -600

I'm not a betting man, because my wife won't let me. But if I were, I'd bet my house and those of three of my relatives on "no" for the last four of those questions.

Andy Freed is a good, young announcer who made Tampa's broadcasts with his partner Dave Willis a lot more interesting. He's into pop culture and has a good sense of humor which might not be a good mesh with Howie Rose who is somewhat humorless and doesn't exhibit much knowledge of anything other than NY sports history (not that it makes him a bad announcer, he's really good at the way he does it.)

Andy Freed also worked for Tom McCarthy when McCarthy was the assistant GM of the Trenton Thunder. I even remember McCarthy working the middle innings of some of the games when Freed as the lead announcer. I agree with Sandy - Freed is a good announder and would be a good fit in New York.

McCarthy's leaving is just another example of the Mets losing on something good. Be it players or announcers, people always seem willing to leave the Mets for something else. Even Dave O'Brien wanted out after one season to go to the Cubs before the Mets refused to let him out of his contract. I remember that when the Mets hired Tim McCarver in 83, they really wanted Bob Costas for the job. They even promised to let Costas hold on to his NBC job, but alas, Costas didn't take it. If I remember correctly, the Mets gave Joe Buck and Skip Caray their first major league baseball gigs. They each did a game or two in the early 90's on WFAN. It was never meant to be permanent, but they managed to carve out pretty decent announcing careers with other teams. Despite all that, I'm pretty sure Andy Freed would flee St. Petersburg for Flushing.

Andy did a very good job with the Pawtucket Red Sox before heading down to Tampa. He's missed up here. In fact he was teamed with Dave Fleming who's now doing the San Francisco Giants games.

Andy Freed was the only good thing on Rays Radio. And a nice guy. Unlike his partner in the Rays booth who should still be doing Kane County Cougars games. And the Rays pre and post game host who should know when this Bud is not for you..When Andy gets this coveted job, it just means that the Rays have lost another very good baseball announcer. Charley Slowes was the first one to escape the Tropicana Fruit Dome two years ago.
